Silver lining to a climate crisis in multiple prospects for alleviating crop waterlogging under future climates

Ke Liu et al.

Summary: Extreme weather events pose a threat to food security, especially due to crop waterlogging, but there is a lack of global assessments on its impacts. This study develops a paradigm that identifies common stress patterns caused by waterlogging and uses a farming systems model to understand future changes. The findings suggest that yield penalties caused by waterlogging will increase in the future, but adaptations such as altering sowing time and using waterlogging-tolerant genotypes can help mitigate the losses.

Identifying sources of uncertainty in wheat production projections with consideration of crop climatic suitability under future climate

Tengcong Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, multiple models were used to assess the impacts of climate change on winter wheat production in the Loess Plateau of China, and the sources of uncertainty were analyzed. The results showed that species distribution models were the main contributor to the uncertainty in winter wheat production projections, while crop models had relatively low uncertainty.

Decomposing crop model uncertainty: A systematic review

Ranju Chapagain et al.

Summary: Crop models are important tools for analyzing the impact of climate variability and change on crop growth and development. However, these models have inherent uncertainties that are difficult to classify and quantify. This study conducted a systematic review on uncertainty assessments of crop model outputs and found that there is a need for standard procedures to estimate and evaluate crop model uncertainty. The study also highlighted the focus on input uncertainty assessments and the use of sensitivity analysis to quantify different sources of uncertainty.

Heterogeneous impacts of excessive wetness on maize yields in China: Evidence from statistical yields and process-based crop models

Weihang Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the impacts of excessive wetness on maize yields is crucial for climate change adaptation and agricultural risk management. This study evaluated the effects of excessive wetness on maize yields in China, considering factors such as growing stage, regional climate, and management practices. The results showed that excessive wetness had a negative impact on maize yields, with the flowering-to-maturity stage being the most sensitive. Moreover, crop models tended to overestimate the positive response of maize yields to excessive wetness.

Profitability of climate-smart soil fertility investment varies widely across sub-Saharan Africa

Ellen B. McCullough et al.

Summary: This study applies a causal forest algorithm and experimental maize trial dataset to model site-specific yield response and economic returns to fertilizer use in sub-Saharan Africa. The results show that the profitability of fertilizer use varies with climate and soil conditions, but remains stable in certain locations. The findings of this study can help decision makers make informed decisions when climate conditions are uncertain and provide insights into the determinants of profitability in different regions.

Daniel Wallach et al.

Summary: Predicting phenology accurately is crucial for adapting varieties to different environmental conditions and crop management. Evaluating 27 modeling groups' prediction of wheat phenology in Northern France revealed that most models outperformed simple average methods, with a mean absolute error of about 3 days, highlighting the importance of model structure in prediction accuracy.

Increased risk of near term global warming due to a recent AMOC weakening

Remy Bonnet et al.

Summary: This study suggests that internal variability of the Atlantic Ocean may have dampened some of the recent warming, impacting the consistency between new climate models and observations. Members with the smallest rates of global warming are also characterized by a large internally-driven weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), potentially affecting efforts to limit global warming to below 2 degrees C.

Large potential for crop production adaptation depends on available future varieties

Florian Zabel et al.

Summary: Climate change affects global agricultural production and food security, potentially requiring new crop varieties to adapt to future environmental changes. The accelerated phenological development of crops due to climate warming may necessitate more heat units to maintain the previous growing period length. The study shows that different climate change scenarios may result in varying degrees of crop variety adaptation needs on a global scale.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of climate change on the global wheat yield variability, finding that over 60% of harvested areas could experience significant changes in interannual yield variability under a high-emission scenario. In the future, wheat yield is projected to become more unstable in some regions, predominantly influenced by temperature changes.

Stronger temperature-moisture couplings exacerbate the impact of climate warming on global crop yields

Corey Lesk et al.

Summary: Climate change is projected to modify temperature-moisture couplings and potentially worsen the impacts of warming on key global crops. Rising air temperatures pose a significant risk to global crop production, with the sensitivity of crops to heat depending on the strength of temperature-moisture couplings in the climate system. However, the impact of these changes on crop yields is highly uncertain in some regions, highlighting the need for robust adaptation strategies to address the underappreciated risk to food production from climate change.

Climate change risks pushing one-third of global food production outside the safe climatic space

Matti Kummu et al.

Summary: Food production on our planet relies heavily on agricultural practices developed under stable Holocene climatic conditions. This study introduces the concept of safe climatic space (SCS) which considers the crucial factors of precipitation, temperature, and aridity for agricultural production. It shows that continued rapid growth of greenhouse gas emissions could push a significant portion of global food crop and livestock production beyond the safe climatic space, particularly affecting vulnerable regions in South and Southeast Asia and Africa's Sudano-Sahelian Zone. Commitment to a low-emissions scenario is crucial to mitigate the risks of food production facing unprecedented conditions.

Impacts of land use, population, and climate change on global food security

Amy Molotoks et al.

Summary: Research indicates that future global food security will be significantly impacted by factors such as climate change, population growth, and changes in land use. Population growth appears to be the primary driver of changes in undernourishment prevalence, highlighting the importance of strategies to mitigate the consequences of projected population growth. Ensuring severe future food insecurity is avoided will require actions such as improving maternal health care, increasing equality of access to food at the national level, closing the yield gap, and changes in trade patterns.
