Cation-Templated Assembly of 613 and 623 Metalla-Links

Hai-Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: By utilizing multiple stacking interactions between components, two kinds of metalla-links with molecular Borromean rings (6(2)(3) links) and head-to-tail cyclic [3]catenanes (6(1)(3) links) were successfully synthesized in high yield using tri-mu-methoxyl-dinuclear complexes as unusual cationic guests during coordination-driven assembly. The topology of these intricate structures was controlled by strategically selecting different dipyridyl ligands, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography and mass spectrometry analysis. The behavior of these metalla-links in solution was further studied using NMR techniques.

Enantiopure FeII4L4 cages bind steroids stereoselectively

Gen Li et al.

Summary: Chiral recognition is crucial in various biological processes and understanding its mechanism can lead to the design of synthetic systems with similar functions. However, current synthetic hosts can only recognize small chiral molecules. This study presents the self-assembly of triazatruxene trialdehyde into chiral FeII4L4 cages that can recognize complex steroids through non-covalent interactions. The recognition events are enantioselective and diastereoselective, showing different binding behaviors between the two enantiomers of the cage. Microcalorimetry experiments provide insight into the enthalpy and entropy contributions during enantioselective binding.

Controlled Construction of Heteroleptic [Pd2(LA)2(LB)(LC)]4+ Cages: A Facile Approach for Site-Selective endo-Functionalization of Supramolecular Cavities

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: Construction of supramolecular structures with internal functionalities is a promising approach to build enzyme-like cavities. The endo-functionalized [Pd12L24] and [Pd2L4] coordination cages represent successful systems in this regard. We provide a solution for the controlled endo-functionalization of [Pd2L4] cages through the formation of heteroleptic [Pd-2(L-A)(2)(L-B)-(L-C)] cages. This strategy allows for the selective introduction of different functional groups and provides a new solution for the controlled endo-functionalization of supramolecular cavities.

Twisted rectangular subunits self-assemble into a ferritin-like capsule

Jack A. Davies et al.

Summary: The vertices of polyhedral protein capsules can be composed of multiple capsule-forming protein subunits, enabling them to enclose more volume and larger cargoes than single proteins. Applying protein cage design principles to synthetic analogs can increase their volume of encapsulation. In this study, a tetrahedral metal-organic capsule was self-assembled from a simple tetramine subcomponent, with each face composed of three ligand panels. The self-assembly rules of this system are programmed into the tetramine, favoring the formation of a large capsule over a simpler cube-like structure. Unlike other large metal-organic capsules, this new capsule has an enclosed cavity and can bind large dianionic guests.
