Flooding trends and their impacts on coastal communities of Western Cape Province, South Africa

Kaitano Dube et al.

Summary: Extreme weather events induced by climate change have significantly increased in the past decade, particularly in coastal cities where there is a notable rise in flooding frequency. The risks of flooding are exacerbated by a combination of human and natural factors, such as extreme rainfall, poor drainage, and land pollution. Comprehensive measures are urgently needed to address these risks and mitigate the impacts on human settlements in South Africa.

Flash flooding hazard assessment, modeling, and management in the coastal zone of Ras Ghareb City, Gulf of Suez, Egypt

Mohamed O. Arnous et al.

Summary: The assessment of flash flood hazards in Ras Ghareb City, Egypt, utilizing GIS tools and spatial multi-criteria approach, provides an effective method for evaluating and mapping potential flood risks. By analyzing factors such as topography, geology, and hydrology, the study identifies and classifies the risk degree of each basin and its sub-basins. The use of remote sensing data and GIS tools enables the delineation of drainage patterns and the development of a flash flood threat model, contributing to the decision-making process in flood management.

Flood vulnerability assessment in the Accra Metropolis, southeastern Ghana

Benjamin Wullobayi Dekongmen et al.

Summary: Floods have become a perennial challenge in major cities and communities located in low-lying areas in Ghana. The study on the Accra Metropolis reveals very high drainage density values, with 32% of the area covered by natural flood-prone zones.

GIS-based rockfall hazard zones modeling along the coastal Gulf of Aqaba Region, Egypt

Adel Omran et al.

Summary: This study focused on designing and implementing user-friendly tools for delineating potential rockfall hazard zones (RHZ). Geomorphological parameters were extracted based on a high-resolution TanDEM-X Digital Elevation Model, lithological and structural lineament parameters were generated using enhanced Landsat ETM + 7, and rainfall data were collected from NASA project tool. The zoning model was implemented through ESRI's ArcGIS Pro ModelBuilder, showing high reliability with Google Earth Pro orthophotos compared with the generated rockfall hazard zonation map indicating the potential RHZ. Results indicate that 15% of the study area qualifies as a high rockfall hazard zone.

Integrated Geoenvironmental and Geotechnical Risk Assessment of East Port Said Region, Egypt for Regional Development

Azza H. Moubarak et al.

Summary: This study discusses the use of integrated topographical, hydrogeological, and geotechnical data to assess the suitability of the East Port Said Region for new major projects. By analyzing the digital elevation model and carrying out statistical analysis of geotechnical parameters, the study identifies risky effective parameters for regional development and integrates geotechnical properties with topographical and hydrogeological parameters. The developed integrated geoenvironmental and geotechnical model assesses prevailing hazards and suggests specific geotechnical improvement techniques for different risk zones in the EPR.
