Placental vascular malperfusion lesions in fetal congenital heart disease

Rachel L. Leon et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of placental pathologies in pregnancies complicated by fetal congenital heart disease compared to healthy controls. The results showed higher rates of vascular malperfusion lesions and chronic inflammation in placentas of fetuses with congenital heart disease, potentially contributing to decreased head circumference at birth.

Summary: Impaired placentation is a significant factor contributing to intra-uterine growth restriction and pre-eclampsia in fetuses with congenital heart defects (CHD), potentially linked to delayed neurodevelopment in CHD cases. Studies have shown that CHD cases have lower placental weight and a higher incidence of microscopic placental abnormalities.
