Proposing a Small-Scale Digital Twin Implementation Framework for Manufacturing from a Systems Perspective

Jonatan H. Loaiza et al.

Summary: Due to the fourth industrial revolution, manufacturing companies are seeking to implement digital twins in their factories to enhance competitiveness. However, the implementation of digital twins in manufacturing systems is a complex task. To address this, the authors propose a small-scale digital twin implementation framework for manufacturing systems, which includes physical, virtual, and information spaces, as well as concepts such as digital thread, data, ontology, and enabling technologies. This framework can be valuable for researchers and practitioners in understanding and applying digital twins across various domains.

Methodology for Certification-Compliant Effect-Chain Modeling

Iris Graessler et al.

Summary: The success of engineering complex technical systems relies on meeting customer requirements and adhering to institutional regulations. A new methodology for developing certification-compliant effect-chain models has been developed, aimed at supporting engineers in the modeling process. Applicability has been proven through evaluation based on extensive workshop experience in the automotive industry. The methodology offers benefits such as goal-oriented modeling, improved model quality, and potential cost reductions.

A model-based systems engineering approach for developing modular system architectures

Benjamin W. Stirgwolt et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates how to incorporate the assessment of system architecture modularity into the architecting process using MBSE, providing guidance and evaluation through modularity ontology and DSM analysis. This approach allows for a more comprehensive understanding of the system and its modularity by considering non-functional characteristics in the formation of modules.

A collaborative knowledge-based method for the interactive development of cabin systems in virtual reality

Mara Fuchs et al.

Summary: Progressive digitization in system development phase reduces development time and costs, but increases complexity and challenges in understanding and modeling system dependencies. This paper proposes a conceptual design method for cabin systems layout based on preliminary aircraft design data, utilizing a central data model and ontology to automate layout and generate missing information. The use of a virtual development platform and VR technology enables iterative, evaluative, and optimized cabin system designs at low cost.

Potentials of Design Thinking for knowledge transfer of Model-Based Systems Engineering

Marvin Manoury et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the use of virtual models and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to address the increasing complexity in industrial product development. While business viability and technological feasibility are often considered, the human factor is often neglected. Design Thinking is proposed as a method to teach non-experts the necessary MBSE competencies and improve the overall development capability.
