Cost-effective maintenance of safety and security barriers in the chemical process industries via genetic algorithm

Shuaiqi Yuan et al.

Summary: Chemical plants are exposed to safety hazards and security threats, which can lead to catastrophic incidents. Managing safety and security barriers effectively and economically is crucial for cost-effective maintenance. This study proposes a novel approach to optimize safety and security barrier maintenance strategy considering economic constraints.

Exploring hazardous chemical explosion accidents with association rules and Bayesian networks

Xin Li et al.

Summary: A qualitative and quantitative model is proposed in this study to explore the causes and paths of hazardous chemical explosion accidents (HCEAs) in China. The accident factors were screened using association rule (AR), and the fault tree (FT) structure of HCEA was developed. The qualitative model was then transformed into a quantitative Bayesian network (BN) model. The results reveal that improper temperature control due to operating procedures is the most likely route to accidents, and process management and operating procedures have the greatest impact on HCEA.

An integrated EDIB model for probabilistic risk analysis of natural gas pipeline leakage accidents

Xing-lin Chen et al.

Summary: Natural gas pipeline construction is growing rapidly worldwide, but leakage accidents are frequent and cause significant losses. However, there are few models to describe and assess the consequences of these accidents. This study proposes a comprehensive risk analysis model, called EDIB model, to analyze the evolution process of leakage accidents and conduct probabilistic risk assessments.

A hybrid approach based on the HFACS-FBN for identifying and analysing human factors for fire and explosion accidents in the laboratory

Laihao Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid method integrating Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS), Fuzzy set theory (FST), and Bayesian network (BN) was applied to identify the most critical and highly contributing human factors in lab fire and explosion accidents. The results showed that organizational influences played a significant role in the top 10 most critical root events associated with human factors leading to lab accidents.

A hybrid model for marine accident analysis based on Bayesian Network (BN) and Association Rule Mining (ARM)

Emre Ozaydin et al.

Summary: In order to ensure maritime safety, it is necessary to study unreported maritime accidents. This study uses Bayesian network and Association Rule Mining methods to analyze data of unreported occupational accidents on Turkish fishing vessels. A network structure and accident occurrence rules are proposed to help analyze the latent factors and requirements for occupational accidents on fishing vessels.

Safety barriers in the chemical process industries: A state-of-the-art review on their classification, assessment, and management

Shuaiqi Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the development of safety barriers in chemical plants, including their definition, classification, evaluation, and management. It proposes a practical classification of safety barriers and extends their functions using the concept of resilience. Performance assessment criteria are suggested, and the management of safety barriers is discussed. A roadmap for future studies to develop integrated management of safety and security barriers for chemical plants is also provided.

Investigation of tugboat accidents severity: An application of association rule mining algorithms

Erkan Cakir et al.

Summary: The study revealed that tugboats aged over 20 years are crucial indicators for serious accidents, with hull/machinery damage and collision type accidents constituting more than half of the total tugboat accidents. Association rule mining showed that four of the five rules for serious accidents are attributed to hull/machinery damage.

Summary: The paper introduces the Construction Safety Training Programme (CSTP) designed to improve safety behaviors in construction sites and address challenges faced by migrant workers, such as language and cultural barriers, time pressures, difficult living conditions, and separation between native and migrant workers. The CSTP consists of five modules incorporating both face-to-face and online teaching to promote sensemaking and social learning, emphasizing the importance of both technical and nontechnical skills in developing a safe working culture in the construction sector.
