Summary: Newly emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 continuously pose global public health concerns and can lead to waves of COVID-19 pandemic. These variants can spread quickly across countries, cause severe disease and reduce the efficacy of current vaccines and immunotherapies. The Omicron variant, first identified in South Africa, is currently the only variant of interest. This review provides an overview of SARS-CoV-2 variants, with a focus on the Omicron variant, its lineages, and hybrid variants. The challenges and strategies to counter the Omicron variant amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are also discussed.

Summary: The newly detected Omicron BF.7 subvariant may pose a threat to humans, and its potential risks need to be evaluated along with possible mitigation strategies. Omicron variants differ from other coronavirus variants in terms of viral spread, disease severity, vaccine neutralization capacity, and immunity evasion. Therefore, healthcare authorities should pay attention to the Omicron BF.7 subvariant.

Summary: Marburg virus (MARV) is a highly concerning virus that causes severe hemorrhagic fever with a high fatality rate. Fruit bats and human-to-human transmission play major roles in the outbreaks of MARV. Due to the rarity of large outbreaks, clinical investigations are often inadequate for determining the treatment of MARV. Therefore, a comprehensive review is important for future medical research and clinical management of this deadly virus.

Summary: This article mainly introduces the taxonomy, geographic distribution, and unique traits of bats as virus reservoirs, as well as the origin, intermediate hosts, and interspecies transmission mechanisms of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and other viruses associated with bats. The molecular interactions between viral surface proteins and host cell receptors are also studied, comparing these interactions in humans, intermediate hosts, and bats.

Summary: Nipah virus is an acute febrile illness that causes fatal encephalitis, endemic to southeast Asia and the western Pacific, primarily transmitted by fruit bats. With high case fatality rates and non-specific symptoms, the challenging diagnosis of Nipah virus highlights the importance of raising awareness about risk factors and clinical presentations to recognize and manage potential outbreaks in the UK.

Summary: Two cases of the deadly Marburg virus have been reported in Ghana, which could be another global virus alert following COVID-19 and novel monkeypox. There is currently no vaccine or treatment available for Marburg virus disease, which has a high mortality rate similar to Ebola. It is concerning that globalization may contribute to the global transmission of this virus, just like what happened with COVID-19. This study provides a brief summary of the etiology, epidemiology, and clinical symptoms of the Marburg virus, as well as vaccine development and experimental treatments, in order to prevent and control the virus.

Summary: Since its initial identification in 1967, the Marburg virus has sporadically emerged in several countries across Africa. Recently, two cases of the virus were detected in Ghana for the first time. However, there is a lack of information regarding this outbreak. Therefore, understanding the current efforts being made in Ghana is crucial to mitigate the dissemination of the virus.

Summary: Since its appearance in December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has become the most devastating pandemic of the 21st century. The coronavirus has high mutation capability and antibody neutralizing capacity, posing a threat to global public health. The Omicron variant has recently gained worldwide dominance. However, there has been a noticeable drop in symptomatic cases globally due to the success of monoclonal antibodies and vaccinations.

Summary: The discovery of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant has raised global concerns due to its rapid spread and ability to evade immunity. The disease caused by this variant is generally asymptomatic or mild, with a reduced risk of hospitalization compared to the Delta variant. However, existing vaccines require boosters and certain antiviral drugs to counter this variant.

Summary: This study examines the potential repurposing of smallpox vaccines and drugs in monkeypox outbreaks. It found that smallpox vaccines have an 85% effectiveness in preventing monkeypox infection, while Orthopoxvirus inhibitors show promise in treating the infection. The repurposing of these vaccines and drugs could be important in fighting monkeypox.
