Prevalence of prediabetes in children and adolescents by class of obesity

Stefania Pedicelli et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of prediabetes in children and adolescents and found that the prevalence was associated with age and obesity. Monitoring of blood pressure, triglycerides, and ALT levels should be encouraged for those with prediabetes.

Association of renin and aldosterone with glucose metabolism in a Western European population: the KORA F4/FF4 study

Cornelia Then et al.

Summary: Primary aldosteronism is associated with impaired glucose tolerance. The association between plasma aldosterone and/or renin concentrations and type 2 diabetes and continuous measures of glucose metabolism in the general population is still debatable. This study found that plasma aldosterone and renin concentrations are mainly unrelated to the incidence of type 2 diabetes and changes in glucose metabolism indicators in the general population.

Jean Jacques Noubiap et al.

Summary: A study conducted in 2019 through systematic review and modeling analysis found that the global prevalence of metabolic syndrome in children was 2.8% and in adolescents was 4.8% in 44 countries across 13 regions, with variations observed in different countries.

Insulin Resistance Is Cheerfully Hitched with Hypertension

Susmita Sinha et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have been on the rise worldwide, especially in low-income and developing countries. Hypertension and diabetes are closely linked, with common risk factors contributing to cardiovascular diseases. In the past 30 years, insulin resistance has significantly increased, further increasing the risk of hypertension and diabetes.

Arterial hypertension is associated with an increased risk of metabolic complications in pediatric patient with obesity

Anna Stepniewska et al.

Summary: The coexistence of arterial hypertension in children with obesity may be an indicator of coexisting metabolic complications. Compared to non-hypertensive patients, those with hypertension had higher fasting insulin levels, HOMA-IR, and post-load glucose levels.

Calreticulin and PDIA3, two markers of endoplasmic reticulum stress, are associated with metabolic alterations and insulin resistance in pediatric obesity: A pilot study

Valentina Antoniotti et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between markers of endoplasmic reticulum stress and metabolic alterations in children and adolescents with obesity. The findings suggest that PDIA3 and CALR may be early markers of obesity and metabolic syndrome risk.

Prevalence of high blood pressure among Canadian Children: 2017 American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines with the Canadian Health Measures Survey

Suzanne K. Robinson et al.

Summary: The study assesses the impact of the 2017 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines on high blood pressure prevalence in generally healthy Canadian children and identifies risk factors related to high blood pressure. The prevalence of high blood pressure increased in Canadian children according to the AAP guidelines, albeit lower than in US children. Children with high blood pressure were more likely to have other cardiac risk factors such as overweight/obesity, prenatal/household smoking exposure, and hypertriglyceridemia.

Serum Renin Levels Increase With Age in Boys Resulting in Higher Renin Levels in Young Men Compared to Young Women, and Soluble Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 Correlates With Renin and Body Mass Index

Lars Jehpsson et al.

Summary: The study found that renin levels in males are significantly higher than females from the age of 15, and renin levels increase with age. There is a positive linear relationship between renin and sACE2 levels in both male and female subjects, and a positive correlation between sACE2 levels and BMI in males.

Obesity, Sodium Homeostasis, and Arterial Hypertension in Children and Adolescents

Malgorzata Wojcik et al.

Summary: The relationship between obesity, arterial hypertension, and excessive salt intake has long been known, but the specific mechanism remains unclear. Recent studies indicate that obese children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the development of salt-sensitive arterial hypertension. Specific dietary recommendations should be developed for overweight and obese patients.

Somatic mutations of GNA11 and GNAQ in CTNNB1-mutant aldosterone-producing adenomas presenting in puberty, pregnancy or menopause

Junhua Zhou et al.

Summary: The study identified gain-of-function somatic mutations in GNA11 or GNAQ in CTNNB1-mutant aldosterone-producing adenomas. These mutations were often found in patients during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, with elevated LHCGR expression. While most aldosterone-producing adenomas have gain-of-function somatic mutations, the presence of these mutations in aldosterone-producing cell clusters of normal adrenal glands indicates a necessity for codriver mutations in APAs.

Obesity-Related Hypertension in Pediatrics, the Impact of American Academy of Pediatrics Guidelines

Irene Rutigliano et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of the 2017 AAP guidelines on the diagnosis of hypertension in overweight and obese children, finding a significant increase in the proportion of children diagnosed with high blood pressure compared to the 2004 criteria. Diagnosis of hypertension according to 2017 AAP criteria showed a strong positive association with hepatic steatosis and TG/HDL ratio.
