A nanofiber-hydrogel composite from green synthesized AgNPs embedded to PEBAX/PVA hydrogel and PA/Pistacia atlantica gum nanofiber for wound dressing

Hajar Rajati et al.

Summary: A polyamide/Pistacia atlantica (P.a) gum nanofiber coated on a layer of PEBAX/PVA hydrogel embedded with green synthesized Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) was assessed for wound dressing application. The AgNPs were characterized using various analysis techniques. The PEBAX/PVA/Ag hydrogel exhibited strong mechanical properties and high antimicrobial activity. Addition of P.a gum improved the mechanical properties of the polyamide nanofibers, resulting in fine and continuous fibers.

Self-Healing Injectable Hydrogels for Tissue Regeneration

Pascal Bertsch et al.

Summary: Biomaterials that can self-heal and maintain their structural integrity have significant advantages in biomedicine. Self-healing injectable hydrogels, a new type of biomaterial, have emerged in the past decade. These hydrogels can temporarily fluidize and then recover their mechanical properties under shear stress. They can be administered locally and minimally invasively, and have moldable properties for personalized medicine. Additionally, they facilitate tissue regeneration through their viscoelastic and diffusive nature. However, challenges remain in balancing self-healing and injectability with physical stability, establishing consensus on rheological characterization, and translating them into therapeutically effective formulations for specific tissues.

Immediate-sustained lactate release using alginate hydrogel assembled to proteinase K/polymer electrospun fibers

Lorena P. Macor et al.

Summary: This study presents the development of a microfibers-hydrogel assembled composite that can achieve both burst and prolonged release of lactate in a single system. The prolonged release is achieved by electrospinning a mixture of polylactic acid and proteinase K, which catalyzes the degradation of polylactic acid into lactate. Burst release is obtained from the lactate-loaded alginate hydrogel. The successful assembly between the hydrogel and the polylactic acid/proteinase K fibers is facilitated by low-pressure oxygen plasma treatment.

Mingguang Li et al.

Summary: Injectable hydrogels reinforced with silk fibroin nanofibers were used to remodel degenerative nucleus pulposus. The composite hydrogel showed excellent compressive strength and leak-proof delivery, and the nanofibers provided support and facilitated cell proliferation. In a rat model, the nanofiber-reinforced hydrogel significantly reduced intervertebral disc degeneration.

Alpha tocopherol-Nanocellulose loaded alginate membranes and Pluronic hydrogels for diabetic wound healing

Anha Afrin Shefa et al.

Summary: Due to the non-healing nature of chronic diabetic wounds, a novel wound healing agent is required. In this study, Alginate (ALG) membrane and Pluronic (R) F-127(P) hydrogel incorporated with alpha-tocopherol (AT) and TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) were designed. The combined application of hydrogels and membranes showed enhanced angiogenesis along with accelerated wound healing in diabetic rats.

Dichu Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ability of non-cantilever based nanoindentation to differentiate between hydrogels with elastic moduli on the order of single kiloPascals (kPa) using a bespoke soft contact protocol and low flexural stiffness of instrument. The results demonstrate that non-cantilever based nanoindentation can achieve differentiation of elastic modulus in the single kPa to hundreds of kPa range for hydrogels.

Electrochemical activation for sensing of three-dimensional-printed poly(lactic acid) using low-pressure plasma

Adrian Fontana-Escartin et al.

Summary: Integrated electrochemical sensors with plasma-treated PLA as a selective coating layer and electrochemical transductor have been prepared. By applying low-pressure gas plasma treatment, 3D-printed PLA specimens are transformed into electroresponsive material. The one derived from low-pressure O-2 plasma treatment shows the best sensor performance. Cell adhesion assays demonstrate higher cell viability for plasma-treated PLA modified samples.
