Battery energy storage systems reinforcement control strategy to enhanced the maximum integration of PV to generation systems

M. H. Saifurrohman et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to determine the maximum penetration level of photovoltaic (PV) generation based on the unit commitment (UC) procedure. The method determines periodically committed generating units, dispatched generating units, and battery energy storage system (BESS) charging and discharging status. The results show that with BESS reinforcement, the PV integration levels are 49%, 35%, and 23% during weekdays, weekends, and lowest days, respectively. Without BESS reinforcement, the PV integration levels are only 45%, 31%, and 17%.

Optimal model evaluation of the proton-exchange membrane fuel cells based on deep learning and modified African Vulture Optimization Algorithm

Jiali Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a new optimized design of a hybrid AlexNet/Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) network for an optimal identification tool for Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The proposed hybrid AlexNet/ELM is aimed at reducing the error between empirical and evaluated output voltages, and a modified version of the African Vulture Optimization (MAVO) Algorithm is suggested to enhance its model formation. The method is validated through a benchmark case study and compared with standard AlexNet/ELM, showing better confirmation with the experimental data.

Encoding Frequency Constraints in Preventive Unit Commitment Using Deep Learning With Region-of-Interest Active Sampling

Yichen Zhang et al.

Summary: With the increasing penetration of renewable energy, ensuring frequency response and its security in power system operations has become a significant concern. This paper proposes a data-driven framework using deep neural networks to predict frequency response and incorporates it into unit commitment. The framework improves the accuracy of frequency constraints by considering all possible power injections and implementing a region-of-interest active sampling. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is demonstrated on the IEEE 39-bus system and validated through full-order dynamic model simulations using PSS/E.

Summary: This dissertation explores the potential of cheap and emission free hydroelectric generation and combined heat and power (CHP) as efficient distributed energy resources. By using a bio-inspired social spider algorithm, the optimal utilization of these sources is studied to achieve cost-effective production, reduced emission, and transmission loss in a short-term scheduling scenario. The results of the test systems demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimization method and the practicality of the algorithm in the concept of hydro-CHP scheduling.

Optimal economic-environmental dispatch in MT-HVDC systems via sine-cosine algorithm

Oscar Danilo Montoya et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the optimal economic-environmental dispatch problem in MT-HVDC networks using the SCA. The SCA is a powerful algorithm that can handle nonlinear non-convex optimization problems. Three variants of the SCA are evaluated in a standard six node MT-HVDC system. The proposed evolutionary approach has the advantage of a pure algorithmic structure and can be easily adapted to any continuous optimization problem.

An improved particle swarm optimisation for unit commitment in microgrids with battery energy storage systems considering battery degradation and uncertainties

Ahmad Rezaee Jordehi

Summary: Using electric storage systems, particularly battery energy storage, is a viable strategy to mitigate the volatility and intermittency of renewable distributed generators in microgrids. This research focuses on incorporating battery degradation into the unit commitment formulation using particle swarm optimization with quadratic transfer function, while addressing uncertainties in demand, renewable generation, and market price through robust optimization. The results show that considering battery degradation in the objective function can lead to increased battery lifecycle and depth of charge, albeit with a slight increase in microgrid operation cost. Additionally, considering uncertainties can lead to an 8.22% increase in microgrid operation cost.
