Summary: The study on CO2 electroreduction pathways towards C2H4 and CH3CH2OH on Cu(100) revealed that optimal pathways involve reactions of COH with CO and COH dimerization, with CHCH2 intermediate leading directly to C2H4 while CH2CH2OH species acts as precursor for CH3CH2OH formation. These findings provide insights into mechanisms for producing C-2 products and offer direction for developing active CO2 electroreduction catalysts.

CO2 electro-reduction on Cu3P: Role of Cu(I) oxidation state and surface facet structure in C1-formate production and H2 selectivity

B. Anders Laursen et al.

Summary: The crystalline nanosheets of copper(I) phosphide, Cu3P, with predominant [00I] facet exposure exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formic acid, producing mainly hydrogen and formate. Surface analysis shows isolated trigonal CuP3 sites and Cu(I) oxidation state as the active catalyst precursor. Formation of a surface hydride at isolated *H-CuP3 sites is proposed as the catalytic site for both H-2 and formate production.
