Challenges and opportunities of area-based conservation in reaching biodiversity and sustainability goals

Samuel Hoffmann

Summary: Area-based conservation faces challenges from human activities, climate change, and invasive species, with a lack of data on nature states and trends. Approaches such as biocultural conservation, climate-smart management, and biosecurity can help overcome challenges, while economic valuation, adaptive management, and information systems can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of protected area management.

Factors Influencing Communities' Attitudes and Participation in Protected Area Conservation: A Case Study from Northern Myanmar

Thazin Htay et al.

Summary: Understanding and ensuring the support of local communities are crucial for the sustainability of Protected Areas. This study interviewed households around the Indawgyi Wildlife Sanctuary and assessed their attitudes and involvement in conservation. The findings showed that most respondents had positive attitudes and good relationships with the sanctuary's staff. Benefits and costs from the protected area played a significant role in shaping attitudes. Additionally, a significant percentage of respondents were engaged in conservation programs, influenced mainly by the benefits gained.

Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation Impacts Community Perceptions around Kibale National Park, Uganda

Lev Kolinski et al.

Summary: The attitudes of community members living around protected areas, specifically Kibale National Park in Uganda, are crucial for effective conservation strategies. By implementing sustainable human-wildlife conflict mitigation strategies, such as digging trenches, installing beehive fences, planting tea, and growing garlic, it is possible to improve relationships between communities and wildlife while reducing crop destruction. Results showed a positive correlation between participation in the project and perceived benefits of living near the park, as well as improved attitudes towards the Uganda Wildlife Authority. This research will inform future conservation initiatives in similar areas where human-animal conflicts occur.

Ecotourism development in Ethiopia: costs and benefits for protected area conservation

Sintayehu Aynalem Aseres et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between ecotourism and biodiversity conservation using the Bale Mountains National Park in Ethiopia as a case study. The findings suggest that there is potential for a positive linkage between ecotourism development and conservation in theory, but in practice, challenges such as low education levels and unfair distribution of benefits exist.
