A comprehensive survey on emotion recognition based on electroencephalograph (EEG) signals

Kranti Kamble et al.

Summary: Emotion recognition using electroencephalography (EEG) has gained interest in various fields and applications, including biomedical, smart environment, brain-computer interface (BCI), communication, security, and safe driving. Numerous studies in the past decade have explored different approaches and algorithms to accurately capture and identify emotions from EEG signals. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly machine learning and deep learning algorithms, has revolutionized emotion recognition techniques and holds promising potential for future improvements. This narrative review aims to provide insights into AI-based techniques, their role in EEG-based emotion recognition, and important topics such as emotion paradigms, EEG processing, and public databases.

Variational Phase-Amplitude Coupling Characterizes Signatures of Anterior Cortex Under Emotional Processing

Chuting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method called variational phase-amplitude coupling to quantify the rhythmic nesting structure in EEGs during emotional processing. The proposed algorithm reduces the risk of spurious coupling compared to other decomposition methods. It is found that activity in the anterior frontal region is a critical indicator for neutral emotional state, and alpha amplitude is linked to both positive and negative emotional states. The alpha-amplitude-related coupling in EEGs is a promising biomarker for recognizing mental states, and the method is recommended for characterizing multifrequency rhythms in brain signals for emotion neuromodulation.

EVNCERS: An Integrated Eigenvector Centrality-Variational Nonlinear Chirp Mode Decomposition-Based EEG Rhythm Separation for Automatic Emotion Recognition

Kranti S. Kamble et al.

Summary: Affective computing, which focuses on identifying emotions from physiological data, namely electroencephalography (EEG), is becoming increasingly significant. An integrated eigenvector centrality-variational nonlinear chirp mode decomposition-based EEG rhythm separation (EVNCERS) is developed to automatically recognize affective emotions. The proposed EVNCERS has achieved high performance in accuracy and F1-score for arousal, valence, and dominance using a random rotation forest classifier.

Application of data fusion for automated detection of children with developmental and mental disorders: A systematic review of the last decade

Smith K. Khare et al.

Summary: Mental health is essential for a sustainable and developing society. The prevalence and financial burden of mental illness have increased globally, and this paper provides a systematic review of nine developmental and mental disorders in children and adolescents. The paper focuses on the use of physiological signals for automated detection of these disorders, and discusses signal analysis, feature engineering, decision-making, challenges, and future directions in this field. The main findings of the study are presented in the conclusion section.

Comparing Recognition Performance and Robustness of Multimodal Deep Learning Models for Multimodal Emotion Recognition

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: This article compares the recognition performance and robustness of two multimodal emotion recognition models (DCCA and BDAE) and proposes two methods to extend the DCCA model for multimodal fusion. Experimental results demonstrate that DCCA achieves state-of-the-art recognition results on multiple data sets and has greater robustness when adding noises.
