Nanocellulose: Recent Advances Toward Biomedical Applications

Xuan-Ran Ong et al.

Summary: Nanocellulose, possessing unique surface chemistry, physical features, and biological attributes, has gained significant attention in the field of biomedical applications. This article provides a summary of recent advances in nanocellulose-based biomedical materials, including biomolecule immobilization, drug delivery, cell culture and tissue engineering, antimicrobial strategy, wound healing, and biomedical implants. Representative examples are presented to highlight the importance of different types of nanocelluloses, such as cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). The current state of large-scale production of nanocellulose and its accelerated development using artificial intelligence and machine learning are also briefly discussed, along with future prospects and potential challenges.

Analysis of the In Vitro Toxicity of Nanocelluloses in Human Lung Cells as Compared to Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Fatima Pinto et al.

Summary: Cellulose micro/nanomaterials (CMNM) are promising bio-nanomaterials with natural and renewable source, attractive properties, and potential for industrial and economical applications. This study evaluated the cell internalization and in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of CMNM compared to multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The results showed that CMNM did not induce cytotoxic effects, while MWCNT did. In terms of genotoxicity, some components of CMNM also exhibited significant genotoxicity.

Adipose and Muscle Cell Co-Culture System: A Novel In Vitro Tool to Mimic the In Vivo Cellular Environment

Palaniselvam Kuppusamy et al.

Summary: Co-culture systems provide a novel platform for studying interactions between different cell types, playing a key role in understanding cell-cell communication and drug response analysis. These systems can influence therapeutic drug responses in a dose-dependent manner, reflecting clinical situations, and may mimic realistic environments with phenotypic and functional characteristics resembling in vivo conditions. The co-culture methods are shown to have wide applications in cell biology studies, particularly in investigating interactions between adipose and muscle tissue under various environments.
