Improved Tribological Properties of Poly(methyl methacrylate) Based Composites by the Synergistic Effect of Incorporating Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene and Heat Treatment

Dapeng Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the synergistic effect of filling ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and heat treatment on the tribological properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based composites. The results show that the friction coefficient and wear rate of the composites are significantly reduced by the combination of UHMWPE filling and heat treatment. The improvement in friction reduction is attributed to the lubrication effect of the filled UHMWPE, while the enhancement in wear resistance is attributed to the improvement in hardness and microstructure compactness caused by heat treatment.

Vidushi Sharma et al.

Summary: This study critically evaluates and analyzes the tribological performance of a chemically modified graphene oxide reinforced HDPE/UHMWPE bionanocomposite as an acetabular liner material for total hip joint replacement. The results show that the modified bionanocomposite exhibits lower friction coefficient and wear rate compared to traditional materials, making it a suitable biomaterial for hip-joint prosthesis.

Melt- vs. Non-Melt Blending of Complexly Processable Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene/Cellulose Nanofiber Bionanocomposite

Nur Sharmila Sharip et al.

Summary: The high melt viscosity of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) poses a challenge in melt-processing of nanocomposites. Blending UHMWPE with cellulose nanofiber (CNF) through melt blending led to improved mechanical properties compared to non-melt blending. The mechanical properties of UHMWPE/CNF bionanocomposites were enhanced with the addition of CNF, demonstrating the effectiveness of melt-blending processing.
