Water-soluble guanidinylated chitosan: a candidate material for protein delivery systems

Hironori Izawa et al.

Summary: In this study, water-soluble guanidinylated chitosan (WGCS) is introduced as a potential material for protein delivery systems to improve the cellular internalization of protein/peptide drugs. WGCS, composed mainly of guanidinylated chitosan, chitosan, and chitin units, showed higher internalization into HeLa cells compared to common chitosan. The increased internalization was attributed to the guanidinylation and electrostatic interactions between WGCS and the protein.

Microwave-Assisted Incorporation of AgNP into Chitosan-Alginate Hydrogels for Antimicrobial Applications

Takuma Oe et al.

Summary: In this study, the antibacterial activity of a hydrogel system composed of sodium alginate (SA) and basic chitosan (CS) was improved by adding AgNPs using sodium hydrogen carbonate. SA-coated AgNPs were produced via ascorbic acid or microwave heating, and their antimicrobial activity was evaluated. The microwave-assisted method was found to produce uniform and stable SA-AgNPs with an optimal reaction time of 8 minutes. The SA-AgNPs/CS gel formed successfully and demonstrated higher mechanical strength and low cytotoxicity, exhibiting inhibition zones against E. coli and B. subtilis.
