Entropy analysis and thermal energy storage performance of PCM in honeycomb structure: Effects of materials and dimensions

Ertugrul Cihan et al.

Summary: This manuscript investigates entropy analysis and improves energy storage of phase change material (PCM) using a honeycomb material. The honeycomb structure is a major tool for improving heat transfer rate, especially for solar radiation PV panels. The study explores the impact of honeycomb cell wall thickness, cell diameter, and honeycomb material types on heat transfer rate of paraffin. Numerical optimization techniques are used to determine the optimal parameters. The results show that the embedded metal cage has no effect on the total heat storage capacity of paraffin, and the ideal honeycomb cell has a uniform distribution of temperature and phase change.

Design and Taguchi-based optimization of the latent heat thermal storage in the form of structured porous-coated pipe

Summary: This study investigates the solidification and melting processes of phase change material within a Structured Porous Coated Pipe (SPCP) and finds its potential application in heat transfer enhancement. Significant improvement in heat transfer enhancement, by as much as an order of magnitude, is observed through different material designs and simulations. The type of material is more important than the thickness of the porous structure.

An Analytical Model to Predict Foot Sole Temperature: Implications to Insole Design for Physical Activity in Sport and Exercise

Hossain Nemati et al.

Summary: Foot sole temperature is an important factor in identifying tissue injuries, and this study proposes a model to predict foot sole temperature with accuracy. The model considers the thermal and mechanical properties of the shoe sole, activity intensity, ambient conditions, and sweating, and allows estimation of the contributions of different parameters in foot thermal regulation.

Effect of Phase-Change Materials on Laboratory-Made Insoles: Analysis of Environmental Conditions

Elena Arce et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to improve the thermal comfort of orthopedic insoles by optimizing the proportions of a new composite material containing a thermoregulatory Phase-Change Material (PCM). The research found that the PCM had a quantifiable influence on the thermal absorption levels of the composite, and the resin-PCM interactions affected the hardness of the material. The final product met the standards for durability and flexibility.

A mathematical model to investigate heat transfer in footwear during walking and jogging

H. Nemati et al.

Summary: Foot temperature during daily activities is affected by the thermal characteristics of footwear, with factors such as heat capacity, heat diffusivity, and thermal conductivity playing a significant role. A proposed method for studying the impact of footwear thermal characteristics on foot temperature during activities like walking or jogging was found to accurately predict plantar temperature. Comparison of two different shoe sole materials showed that heat capacity is more effective than thermal conductivity in reducing plantar temperature in the short term.
