Summary: Various studies have been conducted in recent years to reduce the negative impact of air-conditioning systems on climate change by using environmentally friendly refrigerants with low global warming potential. R513A and R1234yf refrigerants have been found to have lower emissions compared to R134a, making them suitable alternatives to replace HFC refrigerants.

The life cycle climate performance evaluation of low-GWP refrigerants for domestic heat pumps

Changru Yang et al.

Summary: This article evaluates the life cycle climate performance (LCCP) of various low-GWP refrigerants as replacements for R410A in domestic heat pumps. Among the compared refrigerants, the binary blend of HFC32/HF01234ze(E) with a GWP of 300 shows the lowest LCCP. Low-GWP refrigerants may become more competitive than R410A when CO2 emissions from energy generation are reduced through system optimization or the use of renewable energy.

A comprehensive review of life cycle climate performance (LCCP) for air conditioning systems

Hanlong Wan et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the invention and evolution of LCCP, documents its successful application in replacing refrigerants, compares conceptual frameworks and operational approaches, and reflects on drawbacks and future work. The major findings include the importance of energy consumption in AC systems, negligible GHG emissions in refrigerant manufacture, and challenges in data limitations and carbon intensity of electric power. Next-generation LCCP will consider local climate, heat islands, and power supply characteristics.

Summary: This study presents a rigorous exergy analysis of a vapor compression refrigeration system (VCRS) using various refrigerants under standard cooling conditions, finding that R600a performs the best. It also evaluates the total equivalent warming impact (TEWI) for each system, with R600a having the lowest and R12 the highest TEWI levels.
