Effect of substrate temperature on properties of AlN buffer layer grown by remote plasma ALD

Xiao-Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films with considerable properties were prepared using remote plasma atomic layer deposition (RP-ALD). The properties of AlN films with different growth temperatures were studied, and the characteristics of AlN/GaN and AlN/Al2O3 interfaces were analyzed on sapphire substrates. The experimental results showed that crystal AlN films with a hexagonal wurtzite structure were obtained at 250 degrees C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of Al-O, Al-O-N complexes, and Al-Al metallic aluminum bonds in the AlN films. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed sharp interfaces of AlN/Al2O3 and AlN/GaN. Photoluminescence measurements confirmed that the AlN buffer layer enhances the quality of GaN grown on sapphire substrates. The high-quality AlN/GaN layers prepared by RP-ALD provide a promising pathway for high-quality GaN-based devices.

Predicting EHL film thickness parameters by machine learning approaches

Max MARIAN et al.

Summary: Non-dimensional similarity groups and analytically solvable proximity equations can estimate fluid film parameters in elastohydrodynamically lubricated contacts. In this study, machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches are shown to predict these parameters more efficiently and accurately than EHL simulations and proximity equations. The architecture of artificial neural networks and the activation functions have an impact on prediction accuracy. Artificial neural networks can predict local film thickness 25 times faster than FE-based EHL simulations. This advancement in prediction methods can enhance multibody system dynamics simulations.

Point Contact Thermal Mixed Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Under Short-Period Intermittent Motion

Mingyu Zhang et al.

Summary: To improve mechanical efficiency, the tribological performance of short-period intermittent motion is investigated. A mixed-EHL model under point contact simple sliding intermittent motion is established, considering the influences of rough surface. The transition from mixed-EHL to EHL is realized by changing the period of intermittent motion and setting the surface roughness. The thermal effect on simple sliding intermittent motion is significant and should not be ignored. The contact area enters the mixed-EHL state during stop and start-up, especially under rough surface contact. Shortening the period of intermittent motion helps alleviate the adverse effect of mixed-EHL.

Summary: This paper proposes a new method to achieve fully coupled modeling of the piston-ring-liner system from the perspective of multi-flexible-body dynamics. The study considers the contact characteristics of the ring groove and calculates the system boundary loads through the blow-by model. The effect of ring groove deformation on ring properties is revealed, and the complex tribo-dynamic behaviors of the system such as twisting and fluttering are characterized. After fully coupled modeling, piston deformation at the ring groove position can reach 65.80 μm, resulting in a 1.33 μm reduction in the minimum oil film thickness compared to the uncoupled model, and uneven ring wear is aggravated.
