Influences of Farmyard Manure and its Biochars Prepared at Different Temperatures on Soil Properties and Soil Enzymes and CO2 Emission from Soil Under Irrigation Conditions with Treated Wastewater

Caner Yerli

Summary: Irrigation with treated wastewater and using farmyard manure are important for resource utilization. However, soil-sourced CO2 production may pose risks of global warming and soil infertility. Biochar prepared at different temperatures can sequester carbon, reduce emissions, and maintain soil fertility. This study investigates the effects of biochar prepared at different temperatures on soil properties and enzyme activity when mixed with farmyard manure and irrigated with treated wastewater.

Trade-offs in carbon-degrading enzyme activities limit long-term soil carbon sequestration with biochar addition

Jiao Feng et al.

Summary: Biochar amendment is a promising agricultural approach to combat climate change by enhancing soil carbon sequestration. It was found that biochar addition increased soil ligninase activity targeting complex phenolic macromolecules, but suppressed cellulase activity degrading simpler polysaccharides. These shifts in enzyme activities explained variations in soil carbon sequestration in different conditions, and the ligninase:cellulase ratio correlated negatively with soil C sequestration. Short-term biochar addition reduced cellulase activity and increased soil organic C sequestration, while long-term addition enhanced ligninase activity and ligninase:cellulase ratio, resulting in a smaller increase in soil organic C sequestration. This research provides evidence for the diminished long-term soil C sequestration with biochar addition.

Amending biochar affected enzyme activities and nitrogen turnover in Phaeozem and Luvisol

Xing Liu et al.

Summary: The effect of biochar application rate on the mechanism of organic N transformation and enzyme mineralization contribution is unclear. Two 5-year field experiments were conducted in contrasting soils, revealing that biochar application rate significantly influenced soil organic carbon content, microbial biomass nitrogen content, and protease activity, while soil type significantly affected ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen content, and dehydrogenase activity. These findings provide insights into the regulation of soil nitrogen turnover by biochar application.

Biochar alleviated the toxic effects of PVC microplastic in a soil-plant system by upregulating soil enzyme activities and microbial abundance

Summary: Plastics have become a growing pollution concern for agroecosystems and global food security. Biochar, as a pro-ecosystem/negative carbon emission technology, can be used as a circular solution for plastic-contaminated agricultural soils. Limited research has been done on the effects of biochar on plant growth and soil properties in microplastic-contaminated soil.
