Review of Rice-Fish-Duck Symbiosis System in China-One of the Globally Important Ingenious Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS)

Yin Zhang et al.

Summary: The Chinese rice-fish-duck symbiosis system is a globally important agricultural heritage system with a thousand-year history. It embodies the wisdom of Chinese ancestors and provides valuable references for sustainable agriculture. The selection of rice, fish, and duck varieties and the coordination of agricultural operations are the technological core of this system. However, urbanization, technological advancements, economic factors, cultural changes, and climate change pose significant threats and challenges to the traditional system. Active protection, scientific research, system improvement, rural tourism development, and innovation in farming techniques are recommended to safeguard and develop not only this system but other agricultural cultural heritages as well.

Renovation Potential Evaluation and Type Identification of Rural Idle Residential Land: A Case Study of Yuzhong County, Longzhong Loess Hilly Region, China

Libang Ma et al.

Summary: The land problem is crucial for the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy, and land suitability evaluation is fundamental for the renovation and classification of idle rural residential areas. This study focused on Yuzhong County in China and employed an advantage type identification method to create an idle residential identification matrix based on evaluation results of ecological protection suitability, agricultural production suitability, and construction and development suitability. The findings indicate that rural residential waste is severe, with many households owning multiple houses, and there is a renovation potential of 1.18 km(2) in 1700 idle rural residential patches. Additionally, there are significant spatial differences in the suitability of rural residents in Yuzhong County, and rational guidance and planning can provide important decision-making basis for the utilization of rural residents and national land-space planning. Furthermore, the renovation of rural residential areas should be guided by national land-space planning, and a solid plan should be formulated for the renovation, relocation, and reuse of rural hollow houses, in order to stimulate the vitality of rural land resources and promote countryside revitalization and rural living environment improvement.

Is Cultivated Land Increased by Land Consolidation Sustainably Used in Mountainous Areas?

Jian Zhou et al.

Summary: Land consolidation plays an important role in increasing cultivated land area, improving agricultural productivity, increasing farmers' income, and promoting rural development in the mountainous areas of China. The study found that the increased cultivated land through land consolidation is mainly terrace, especially in the Hanzhong Basin Area and Qinba Mountainous Area. The transformation rate of terrace cultivation is relatively low.

Arable land and water footprints for food consumption in China: From the perspective of urban and rural dietary change

Daohao Yan et al.

Summary: Since the open-door policy, China's dietary pattern has undergone significant changes, with meat, vegetable oil, soybeans, and liquor requiring more arable land and water. Urban residents have higher per capita arable land and water footprints compared to rural residents. From 1983 to 2017, there has been a considerable increase in the total arable land and water footprints for food consumption. In the future, the demand for arable land and blue water footprints will continue to rise, but can be reduced under a balanced dietary pattern.

Development of agricultural land markets in countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Maxim Gorgan et al.

Summary: Agricultural land markets in Eastern Europe and Central Asia are weak and face constraints such as informalities, absent owners, technical errors, and complicated transaction procedures. Most countries have fragmented farm structures and small average farm sizes. It is important to establish coherent national land policies and utilize land consolidation and land banking as land management instruments for agricultural and rural development.

Integrated livestock sector nitrogen pollution abatement measures could generate net benefits for human and ecosystem health in China

Zhiping Zhu et al.

Summary: High-resolution maps of livestock production in China show that improvements in breeding, feeding, and manure management can reduce nitrogen pollution and bring benefits to both humans and ecosystems. However, the lack of detailed spatial livestock production data hampers ongoing pollution mitigation strategies.

Dietary change in high-income nations alone can lead to substantial double climate dividend

Zhongxiao Sun et al.

Summary: Shifting from animal-based to plant-based diets in high-income nations can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and increase carbon sequestration when saved land is restored to natural vegetation. The adoption of the EAT-Lancet planetary health diet by 54 high-income nations could reduce their annual agricultural production emissions by 61% and sequester up to 98.3 (55.6-143.7) GtCO(2) equivalent, fulfilling these nations' future carbon dioxide removal obligations.

Circular Food Behaviors: A Literature Review

Natalia Rohenkohl do Canto et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of circular food behaviors in literature, categorizing them into linear, transitioning, and circular behaviors. It highlights the predominance of empirical data collection in Europe, focuses on behaviors related to protein alternatives, food waste, and upcycled foods, and emphasizes the importance of consumer education and communication. Circular behaviors are characterized by their systemic approach, defining consumers as doers or prosumers, pursuing long-term sustainability goals, showing high engagement of skilled consumers, and being supported by technologies. Future research should consider the social dimension of sustainability and adopt a systemic view of circular food behaviors.

Summary: Restoring degraded lands is a global priority, with Forest Landscape Restoration focusing on improving ecological functioning, biodiversity conservation, and human livelihoods. Evaluating land suitability for restoration is crucial, and a method based on matter-element model was introduced in this study, showing that altitude, slope, and soil depth are the main factors influencing restoration success in Zigui County. About 100 km(2) of land in Zigui is suitable for restoration, accounting for roughly 60% of the theoretical recoverable area.

Biodiversity and sustainability of the integrated rice-fish system in Hani terraces, Yunnan province, China

Feifan Li et al.

Summary: The rice-fish coculture system can reduce total nitrogen content and increase dissolved oxygen concentration compared to traditional fertilized rice farming, resulting in better water quality. Dominant zoobenthos in the system indicate mesotrophic water levels, and the plankton biodiversity is rich, serving as natural feeds for fish in the integrated farming. The complementary use of nitrogen between rice and fish leads to low N fertilizer application and reduced environmental contamination.
