Spatial characteristics and influencing factors of Chinese traditional villages in eight provinces the Yellow River flows through

Chenge Gao et al.

Summary: With the global trend towards urban-based policies, traditional villages in China are facing imbalanced development and the possibility of revitalization or decline. This study examines 1,222 traditional villages in the Yellow River Basin to investigate their spatial characteristics and influencing factors. The results show that the spatial distribution of traditional villages in the region is influenced by both natural factors and socioeconomic factors, with natural factors having a greater impact. Furthermore, there is no inevitable correlation between economic development and the rise and fall of traditional villages. The findings of this research contribute to a deeper understanding of traditional villages and provide insights for rural revitalization and regional development.

Risk assessment and validation of farmland abandonment based on time series change detection

Hang Chen et al.

Summary: Farmland abandonment is a common phenomenon during land-use transition, but its potential risk has received insufficient attention. This study constructed a risk assessment system for farmland abandonment in the Yangtze River Economic Belt of China and verified its reliability. The results showed that farmland abandonment risk had strong spatial heterogeneity, with low-risk farmland mainly distributed in provinces such as Jiangsu and Anhui, and high-risk farmland mainly concentrated in provinces such as Sichuan and Yunnan. The study provides a scientific basis for the management of farmland abandonment.

Measuring the Level of Urban-Rural Integration Development and Analyzing the Spatial Pattern Based on the New Development Concept: Evidence from Cities in the Yellow River Basin

Leiru Wei et al.

Summary: Urban-rural integration development (URID) is a solution to address the urban-rural gap and inequitable development. It contributes to the high-quality and sustainable development in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) through the evaluation and measurement of urban-rural integration (URI). The study reveals that from 2010 to 2020, URID levels generally increased in the YRB, but regional differences and uneven development between provinces became more prominent. It is suggested to manage urban and rural regions as a cohesive whole, promote urban cluster construction, support rural development, and invest in advantageous industries to achieve high-quality sustainable development in the YRB.

Urbanization effects on intensifying extreme precipitation in the rapidly urbanized Tai Lake Plain in East China

Chaogui Lei et al.

Summary: With global warming and regional urbanization, extreme precipitation (EP) has various effects on human life and ecosystems. However, the specific contribution of accelerating urbanization to EP changes is less understood. This study focused on the Tai Lake Plain (TLP), one of the most urbanized regions in China, and found that EP is becoming more frequent and intense, particularly in the northeast and southeast of TLP. Urbanization has contributed to the increase in EP frequency and magnitude, accounting for a significant portion of the overall trend.

Ecological Security Patterns at Different Spatial Scales on the Loess Plateau

Liangguo Lin et al.

Summary: The study of ecological security patterns (ESPs) is crucial for enhancing ecosystem services and promoting ecological protection and socio-economic development. This study focused on ESPs on the Loess Plateau as an integral part of the national security strategic pattern. Using remote sensing data, ESPs were identified at different spatial scales, and the similarities and differences of ecological sources, corridors, and strategic points were analyzed. The results can inform the development of ecological protection strategies and the implementation of macro and micro level plans. Factors like human activities and land use types were found to influence the distribution of corridors, pinch points, and barrier points. It is important to consider the spatial scale when formulating ecological protection strategies and to design specific programs based on ESP characteristics to maximize biodiversity and ecosystem integrity.

Spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and influencing factors of traditional villages: the Yellow River Basin in Henan Province, China

Yan Feng et al.

Summary: Henan Province is the birthplace of Chinese civilization and has important national cultural heritage in the form of traditional villages. This study focuses on the traditional villages in the Yellow River basin in Henan Province that formed before 1919. By analyzing the spatiotemporal characteristics of these villages and exploring the factors that influenced their evolution, the study provides a theoretical reference for the sustainable development of China's traditional villages. The results show that the formation of traditional villages along the Yellow River in Henan Province has experienced historical changes and the spatial distribution of these villages is closely related to climatic fluctuations, changes in the river channel, water conservancy projects, and social and cultural factors.

Overview assessment of risk evaluation and treatment technologies for heavy metal pollution of water and soil

Zhou Wang et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution poses significant risks to human and environmental health, and has attracted widespread attention. However, there are still challenges in monitoring, managing, and mitigating heavy metal pollution, including the lack of systematic risk evaluation criteria and governance methods. Researchers utilize risk assessment and multivariate statistical analysis methods to select treatment technologies. Comprehensive considerations of contaminated time, concentration and nature of contaminants, soil/water and site characteristics, contaminant availability, and existing regulations are essential for formulating appropriate restoration and treatment plans. The combination of GIS and modeling appears to be the most effective approach for analyzing heavy metal pollution risks. Various physicochemical and biological technologies have been employed for heavy metal removal from water and soil, but no single method is universally effective. Combining different technologies can enhance efficiency and provide a reasonable approach to inter-governmental, cross-border prevention and monitoring of anthropogenic pollution sources.
