Reconversion of Agri-Food Production Systems and Deagrarianization in Spain: The Case of Cantabria

Summary: Deagrarianization refers to the dwindling importance of agrarian activity in rural areas, as seen in the decline in agricultural production and income. It not only has economic consequences but also erodes the rural population's role in territorial organization and social functioning. However, the shift towards the service economy has led to the emergence of new forms of rurality. This paper focuses on the case of Cantabria in Spain to gain insights into rural deagrarianization processes, using indicators related to agriculture, livestock, forestry, and occupational structure.

The forest transition as a window of opportunity to change the governance of common-pool resources: The case of Mexico's Mixteca Alta

Summary: The concept of windows of opportunity refers to circumstances or events that trigger and promote governance changes for more sustainable management of ecosystems and common-pool resources. Case study in Mexico's Oaxaca state shows that demographic, socioeconomic, and land-use changes, along with the emergence of new institutions and organizations, provided a window of opportunity for communities to change the governance of their forests and grazing lands. This resulted in the expansion of wooded areas in a positive feedback loop.
