Summary: This study conducts an economic feasibility analysis for energy communities with two investment options and various cost allocation methods. The results show that it is economically feasible for a third party to invest in an energy community with the right energy prices and payback time. Multiple cost allocation methods can be implemented within the same energy community. Local community members benefit the most from joint investment, despite the high initial investment costs. The energy costs of each household are greatly influenced by the payback time and cost allocation methods.

Summary: The importance of accelerating the decarbonisation of the energy system has led to a renewed focus on energy communities. These communities are seen as new instruments that can contribute to increasing renewable energy capacity, mobilizing private capital, providing flexibility for the electricity system, and empowering consumers. This study presents five energy community business models (ECBMs) within the context of the centralized French energy system and assesses their contributions to these policy objectives. The analysis shows that while ECBMs have not yet enhanced grid flexibility, they do contribute differently to the other three objectives. However, the diffusion of ECBMs is limited due to legal, organizational, and financial barriers. The study proposes three recommendations to promote the diffusion of ECBMs, including protecting economic viability, supporting intermediaries, and nurturing local governments as key enablers. The findings aim to guide policymakers in effectively including energy communities in their energy policy roadmaps.

Summary: Energy communities can contribute to a low-carbon and decentralized energy system with more renewable energies and citizen participation. This study focuses on georeferenced modeling and assessment of potential domestic hot water energy communities based on heat pumps and photovoltaic energy communities in 150 residential buildings in a Mediterranean city. The results show significant economic and emission savings, with heat pumps achieving up to 85% and 73% respectively, and photovoltaic systems achieving up to 22% and 23% respectively. Prioritizing domestic hot water energy communities can effectively reduce CO2 emissions, while combining both energy communities can help achieve the objectives of the Fit for 55 package for 2030, with emission savings up to 56%.

Summary: Statistical accounting of citizen-led energy initiatives is lacking, despite their significant impacts on various aspects such as energy self-sufficiency, renewable energies, sustainable development, citizen engagement, and social innovation. This paper provides estimates on the collective contributions of such initiatives in Europe, including the number of initiatives, projects, people involved, renewable capacities, and investments made. While these aggregate estimates do not suggest the replacement of commercial enterprises and government actions, there is strong evidence of the importance of citizen-led collective action in the European energy transition.

Summary: Land use, transport, and energy-environment integration (LUTEI) is a complex approach to improving urban resilience that is receiving considerable attention. However, research on this multidisciplinary topic is fragmented, hindering useful analysis of its role in shaping sustainable cities. This paper undertakes a systematic review to consolidate diverse perspectives, identifying four main clusters of knowledge and finding that while there is focus on improving accessibility planning and policy integration, the integration of environment and energy is still in its early stages. The paper concludes by connecting LUTEI dimensions to the UN's sustainable development goals and outlining future research directions.
