Investigating the influence of future landuse and climate change on hydrological regime of a humid tropical river basin

Kashish Sadhwani et al.

Summary: Landuse landcover (LULC) and climate change have significant hydrological impacts in humid tropical regions. This study investigates the impact of future LULC and climate change on water balance components in the Periyar river basin in India. The results show that climate change has a greater impact in the near and mid future, while LULC change has a greater impact in the far future. The study provides valuable insights for understanding hydrological regime changes and effective water resources management.

Global Maps of Agricultural Expansion Potential at a 300 m Resolution

Mirza Cengic et al.

Summary: The global expansion of agricultural land is a major contributor to climate change and loss of biodiversity. To address the limitations of current global land change models, we developed high-resolution global maps using artificial neural network models. These maps provide representative estimates of the potential for agricultural land conversion and can facilitate more accurate environmental assessments.

Shallow landslide susceptibility assessment under future climate and land cover changes: A case study from southwest China

Zizheng Guo et al.

Summary: A study was conducted in Wanzhou County, southwest China to analyze future rainfall-induced shallow landslide susceptibility by considering land use and land cover changes and climate change. The study found that future rainfall conditions in the region will significantly change, and the negative impact of climate change on landslide susceptibility is greater than the stabilizing effect of land use change.

Impacts of future climate and land cover changes on landslide susceptibility: regional scale modelling in the Val d'Aran region (Pyrenees, Spain)

Marcel Hurlimann et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impacts of future climate and land use changes on landslides susceptibility in the Val d'Aran region using climate models and land use software. The results indicated significant environmental changes in the future, with increased rainfall and changes in land cover. However, the overall stability condition is expected to improve due to the combined effects of land use changes outweighing the negative influence of rainfall changes.

Global simulation of fine resolution land use/cover change and estimation of aboveground biomass carbon under the shared socioeconomic pathways

Li Zeng et al.

Summary: Land use change driven by human activities has significant impacts on the terrestrial carbon budget, but the effects of land use change and carbon pools at a fine spatial resolution are not well understood. This study projected future global land use change and analyzed its impacts on aboveground biomass carbon under different scenarios. The findings suggest that sufficient spatial details in scenario projections can reduce uncertainties in assessing aboveground biomass and that reasonable land use development and management are crucial for mitigating the negative impacts of land use change on the biomass carbon pool.

Land use/land cover prediction and analysis of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River under different scenarios

Shengqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study predicts and analyzes land use and land cover changes in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River basin under different future scenarios. The findings show that forests and farmland exhibit significant changes, and factors such as GDP, population, temperature, and precipitation play crucial roles in driving these changes.

Analysis of Changes in Landslide Susceptibility according to Land Use over 38 Years in Lixian County, China

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that landslides frequently occur in Lixian County, with significant changes in land use, particularly affecting areas prone to landslides such as agricultural land and low coverage grassland. The main drivers of landslide susceptibility are changes in agricultural and rural land use.

Habitat fragmentation amplifies threats from habitat loss to mammal diversity across the world's terrestrial ecoregions

Koen J. J. Kuipers et al.

Summary: This study presents a species-area model that integrates habitat size and connectivity to predict threats to non-volant mammal diversity from habitat loss and fragmentation across the world's ecoregions. On average, 10 mammal species are at risk of extinction due to habitat loss and fragmentation, with 9% of the threat coming from fragmentation. The model can inform and evaluate strategies for minimizing biodiversity loss and optimizing habitat conservation and restoration on a large scale.
