Evaluation of parameter sensitivity of a rainfall-runoff model over a global catchment set

Leonard Santos et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the parameter sensitivity of a process-based model at the global scale using large-sample data. The results indicate that both soil and snow parameters are sensitive. The analysis also explores the relationship between catchment characteristics and parameter sensitivity using a global dataset, and reveals different patterns of sensitivity for different climate classes. Additionally, the numerical sensitivity method is compared with expert judgement to validate the reliability of the numerical results.

The impact of irrigation return flow on seasonal groundwater recharge in northwestern Bangladesh

Shibli Sadik Tulip et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impact of irrigation on groundwater recharge in the northwest Rajshahi district of Bangladesh. The results show an increase in groundwater use for irrigation, but a persistent decrease in groundwater levels. About 33% of total irrigation becomes return flow and contributes to groundwater recharge, with irrigation return flow accounting for 98% of total recharge in the dry season. Proper measurement and management of irrigation water are crucial for sustainable groundwater resource management in this region.

Sustainable Groundwater Potential Zoning with Integrating GIS, Remote Sensing, and AHP Model: A Case from North-Central Bangladesh

Ujjayini Priya et al.

Summary: This study uses GIS, remote sensing, and the analytical hierarchy process to model groundwater potential zones in the north-central region of Bangladesh. The integration of multiple thematic layers through weighted overlay analysis successfully delineates the groundwater potential zones. The results are verified with well yield and groundwater depth data, showing a significant positive correlation.

Assessment of groundwater recharge along the Guarani aquifer system outcrop zone in SAo Paulo State (Brazil): an important tool towards integrated management

Lucas Vituri Santarosa et al.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the spatial and temporal variations of groundwater recharge in the outcrop zones of the Guarani Aquifer System in Brazil, using the Spatial Recharge method and comparing it with two traditional methods. The three methods showed similar estimates for groundwater recharge, around 17% of total rainfall, with the SR method providing robust estimation capabilities for areas lacking hydrological monitoring programs. The SR method offers valuable information for water management policymakers to mitigate impacts of climate variations and land use on recharge processes.

The link between climate change, food security and fertility: The case of Bangladesh

Mengni Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals that climate change has direct and indirect effects on the fertility rate in Bangladesh. Temperature and precipitation impact crop production, which in turn affects fertility behavior. While economic development plays a significant role in fertility decline, factors such as maximum temperature, crop production, and rainfall also contribute to changes in fertility rates.

Water usage trends under intensive groundwater-irrigated agricultural development in a changing climate ? Evidence from Bangladesh

Mohammad A. Mojid et al.

Summary: Comprehensive information on the past trend of local-level water usage of cultivated crops is important for agricultural planning. However, such information is lacking for the North-West region of Bangladesh. The study found significant decreasing trends in ET for Rabi crops and cropping patterns in all districts, as well as an increase in total volumetric quantities of water due to expanded irrigated area over time.

Yield, profitability, and prospects of irrigated Boro rice cultivation in the North-West region of Bangladesh

Mohammed Mainuddin et al.

Summary: The research evaluated the productivity, profitability, and prospect of Boro rice production in the North-West region of Bangladesh, highlighting significant variations in rice yield and profitability, as well as the impact of market price fluctuations on overall profitability. Risk and return analysis showed that Minikit and BRRI dhan29 are the most stable varieties for yield and profitability.

Rainfall-induced recharge-dynamics of heavily exploited aquifers - A case study in the North-West region of Bangladesh

Mohammad Abdul Mojid et al.

Summary: The declining groundwater level in the North-West region of Bangladesh poses a significant threat to groundwater-based irrigated agriculture. The study found a time-lag for GWL response to rainfall, quantified threshold minimum rainfall for GWL rise, and identified locations and durations of recharge deficit and rejection. Variability in recharge processes among sub-regions highlights the need for tailored groundwater extraction and management policies.
