Investigation into shale softening induced by water/CO2-rock interaction

Ning Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the shale softening behavior induced by water/CO2-rock interaction was investigated using SEM observation and nanoindentation tests. It was found that the extent of micromechanical degradation was influenced by the soaking fluid type and time. SEM images showed that fractures induced by hydration had larger apertures compared to those induced by adsorption. The statistical results of nanoindentation tests demonstrated that the Young's modulus and hardness decreased significantly with increased soaking time for water soaking, while the extent of shale softening was alleviated for CO2 soaking.

Investigating the influence of water on swelling deformation and mechanical behavior of mudstone considering water softening effect

Tie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of water on the swelling characteristics and mechanical behavior of mudstone. A moisture diffusion-fracture coupling model based on the finite-discrete element method (FDEM) is utilized, considering the water softening effect. The model is calibrated using uniaxial, triaxial compression, and swelling tests, and then applied to numerical tests on water-soaked mudstone. The results show that water content has a significant impact on the mechanical strength and failure patterns of mudstone under compression.

A study on the energy sources and the role of the surrounding rock mass in strain burst

Charlie C. Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates strain burst in highly stressed hard rocks in underground excavations and explores the energy sources and conversion during the burst. Through numerical modeling and analytical verification, it concludes that the energy released from the surrounding rock mass is more important in large-scale burst events, while the energy released from the bursting rock itself is crucial in shallow burst events.

Summary: Water inrush is a dangerous disaster in coal mining, causing thousands of deaths and economic losses in China. The occurrence of water inrush is determined by water source and water-conducting pathway. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of seepage mechanisms during water inrush, including stress-seepage coupling, flow regime transformation, and rock erosion.

Experimental and numerical study on failure characteristics and mechanism of coal under different quasi-static loading rates

Xuewei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanical strength and failure characteristics of coal samples were investigated through experiments and numerical simulation. It was found that the strength parameters of the coal samples increase rapidly at first and then slow down as the loading rate increases. The failure mode and strain distribution also change with increasing loading rate.

A Stratified NMR-Based Investigation of Spatial Evolution of Pore Structure in Sandstone After Cyclic Heating and Local Water Cooling

Can Du et al.

Summary: This investigation examines the effects of local water-cooling shock on the physical properties and spatial evolution of pore structure in thermal sandstone. The results show that water cooling leads to degeneration of porous structure, changes in physical properties, and increased permeability. The damage evolution varies across different parts of the sample, with greater increases in micro-, meso-, and macro-pores observed in the immersed part compared to the air-exposed part. The study also finds that the total porosity and damage factor increase with temperature, water cooling depth, and cycles, and that permeability is more dependent on porosity than pore size distribution.

Numerical investigation into impacts of major fault on coal burst in longwall mining-A case study

Chunchen Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of geological faults on coal burst in underground mining through a large-scale discontinuum model. By calculating four model indicators, the behavior of fault-slip, stress, and strain energy changes during longwall retreat were analyzed, leading to the development of a coal burst risk classification. A parametric study was conducted to explore the effects of various conditions on fault-slip behavior and stress and strain energy distributions, providing insights into coal burst proneness assessment.

The influence of long-time water intrusion on the mineral and pore structure of coal

Leilei Si et al.

Summary: Intrusion of formation water into coal seams reduces gas extraction efficiency. Experiments showed decreased mineral content and changed pore structure in coal due to water intrusion. Factors such as clay mineral collapse, mineral dissolution, and coal swelling play significant roles in influencing the pore structure of coal during water intrusion.

Yuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the seepage processes of chemical grout flow in fractured rock under various temperatures and confining pressures using low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) testing technique. The results showed that the viscosity of the grout exhibited time-dependent and temperature-dependent characteristics, and the flow pattern was greatly influenced by injection pressure and less affected by temperature. Additionally, the permeability of the sandstone increased with higher injection pressure and lower temperature.
