Assessment of land degradation and restoration in coal mines of central India: A time series analysis

Tarun Kumar Thakur et al.

Summary: The study analyzed land use changes in Sohagpur and Bishrampur coal mines in central India from 2001 to 2020. It found that forests had degraded, water bodies decreased, and mine/overburden dumps increased. The soil nutrient content and properties differed between the two sites, impacting the livelihoods of local people.

Remote-Sensing Evaluation and Temporal and Spatial Change Detection of Ecological Environment Quality in Coal-Mining Areas

Xinran Nie et al.

Summary: The large-scale development and utilization of coal resources in coal-mining areas have posed great challenges to the ecological environment. This paper proposes the use of scientific methods to monitor and evaluate the changes in ecological environment quality in coal-mining areas, aiming to alleviate the contradiction between human and nature and achieve sustainable development. The paper introduces the coal dust index (ICDI) and the coal-mine ecological index (CMEI) to quantify coal dust pollution and evaluate ecological environment quality. The research shows improvement in the ecological environment quality of the Ningwu Coalfield, with certain areas experiencing degradation. The utilization and popularization of CMEI provide important references for decision makers in formulating ecological protection policies and implementing regional coordinated development strategies.

Simulation of the climatic changes around the coastal land reclamation areas using artificial neural networks

Cagdas Kuscu Simsek et al.

Summary: Over the past 20 years, Istanbul has undergone intense land use/cover change due to investment strategies in the construction sector and urban transformation works. The disposal of debris from building demolitions has led to the creation of land reclamation areas, posing threats to the marine ecosystem and impacting local climate. Using Artificial Neural Networks, the study examined thermal environment changes in coastal reclamation areas of Istanbul and found that the simulations were sensitive enough to monitor thermal changes in urban areas.

Modeling soil quality in Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt using GIS techniques

Ahmed S. Abuzaid et al.

Summary: This study used remote sensing and GIS techniques to evaluate soil quality in Dakahlia Governorate, north Nile Delta of Egypt. The results showed that 29% of the agricultural lands were classified as very high quality, 30% as high quality, 33% as moderate quality, 3% as low quality, and 5% as very low quality. The developed model provides a useful tool for monitoring soil performance in the studied area.

Quantitative evaluation of ecological cumulative effect in mining area using a pixel-based time series model of ecosystem service value

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study proposed a pixel-based time series model of ecosystem service value (ESV) to quantify the ecological cumulative effect (ECE) in mining areas, revealing its spatial distribution, heterogeneity and dynamic process. The model showed reliable performance in reflecting the spatio-temporal changes of ECE and achieved dynamic evaluation in the time dimension.

Soil quality changes in an Iberian pyrite mine site 15 years after land reclamation

J. C. Fernandez-Caliani et al.

Summary: The study found that after 15 years of restoration, the soil quality of the historical mine site improved significantly in terms of key properties such as structural stability, cation exchange capacity, degree of base saturation, soil organic carbon, and available phosphorus. The combined use of sugar beet lime and composted biosolids as a low-cost, locally available soil amendment was effective in neutralizing acidity, reducing the mobility of trace elements, enhancing soil fertility, carbon storage, and microbial biomass. Additionally, revegetation with Pinus pinea and Nerium oleander proved to be a successful strategy in creating a visually appealing vegetative cover.

Changes detected in the extent of surface mining and reclamation using multitemporal Landsat imagery: a case study of Jiu Valley, Romania

Iosif Vorovencii

Summary: The study analyzed surface mining and reclamation in the Jiu Valley mining area in Romania using satellite imagery and indices, finding an increase in surface mining area over the past 30 years, primarily converted from agricultural, forest, and pasture land. A large portion of the mined areas consisted of active mines, reclaimed grassland, and reclaimed woodland.

Construction of landscape ecological network based on landscape ecological risk assessment in a large-scale opencast coal mine area

Wanxia Xu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed landscape ecological risks in the Pingshuo opencast coal mine area of Shanxi Province, China from 1986 to 2015 using remote sensing images and risk assessment models. It was found that overall risk levels improved with land reclamation during coal mining, and the risks were mainly influenced by factors such as mining scale and urban expansion.

Evaluating the environmental and economic impact of mining for post-mined land restoration and land-use: A review

Adator Stephanie Worlanyo et al.

Summary: Mining has been a significant driver of economic development, but it also has negative impacts on the environment and society. Reclamation plays a crucial role in mitigating the negative effects of mining and restoring soil productivity, stimulating microbial growth, and facilitating early ecological succession. Proper planning and analysis are essential before embarking on post-mining rehabilitation to ensure sustainable land use.
