A Comparison of Machine Learning and Empirical Approaches for Deriving Bathymetry from Multispectral Imagery

Wenneng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study conducted a bathymetric inversion study in optically shallow water using Sentinel-2 satellite images and Ganquan Dao measured bathymetry data. The results show that the machine learning models, especially the random forest model, have better fitting ability than the Stumpf empirical model when the water depth is greater than 15 m. The random forest model had the highest overall accuracy among these models, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.41 m and a regression coefficient (R-2) of 0.96 for the test data.

Satellite-derived bathymetry using Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2A images: assessment of atmospheric correction algorithms and depth derivation models in shallow waters

Zhixin Duan et al.

Summary: This study explored the effectiveness of three atmospheric correction algorithms and six SDB models for depth retrieval. The results showed that the three atmospheric correction algorithms were effective in SDB. Among the SDB models, machine learning models generally had superior accuracy compared to empirical inversion models, with MLP achieving the best accuracy and consistency.

A Purely Spaceborne Open Source Approach for Regional Bathymetry Mapping

Nathan Thomas et al.

Summary: In recent years, the combination of spaceborne ICESat-2 lidar data and Landsat/Sentinel-2 data has reduced the cost and difficulty of collecting bathymetry data. In this study, an open source approach was developed to generate bathymetry maps for the shallow water region around the island of Andros, Bahamas. The approach efficiently processed ICESat-2 tracks and Landsat-8 scenes, providing per-pixel depth estimates with high accuracy.

Determination of Water Depth in Ports Using Satellite Data Based on Machine Learning Algorithms

Vanesa Mateo-Perez et al.

Summary: One of the fundamental maintenance tasks of ports is the periodic dredging to ensure safe access for ships. This study used satellite data and machine learning algorithms to estimate seabed in ports, with RF and SVM algorithms performing better than MARS. The approach is suggested as a simpler and cost-effective alternative for estimating water depth in ports.

Towards a regional high-resolution bathymetry of the North West Shelf of Australia based on Sentinel-2 satellite images, 3D seismic surveys, and historical datasets

Ulysse Lebrec et al.

Summary: High-resolution bathymetry data is crucial for marine geoscientists and can be acquired using costly methods. This paper introduces an integrated workflow using satellite images and 3D seismic surveys to produce regional high-resolution digital elevation models. The method was applied in the southern half of Australia's North West Shelf, resulting in a significant improvement over pre-existing regional grids. The vertical and spatial accuracy of the datasets from seismic and satellite-derived bathymetry were assessed, showing promising results for future research projects.
