Tobacco use among native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander youth in the US and USAPI: a systematic review of the literature

Mistie Hokulani Rosario et al.

Summary: This study explored tobacco use among Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders (NHPIs) youth and young adults. The findings revealed that NHPI youth smoking and vaping are influenced by community factors, peer pressure, social status, flavor variety, craving, and stimulation. Moreover, there is a shortage of research on tobacco use prevention and intervention specifically targeting NHPI youth.

Age-dependent effects of tobacco smoke and nicotine on cognition and the brain: A systematic review of the human and animal literature comparing adolescents and adults

Karis Colyer-Patel et al.

Summary: Cigarette smoking initiation during adolescence is associated with worse health outcomes, but quitting smoking becomes easier in adulthood. This systematic review found that compared to adult exposure, adolescent exposure to tobacco and nicotine leads to heightened fear learning, anxiety-related behavior, reward processing, nicotinic acetylcholinergic receptors expression, dopamine expression, and serotonin functioning. The effects of nicotine or tobacco use on impulsivity are similar across age groups. These findings provide new insights into the vulnerability of adolescents to tobacco and nicotine.

Balancing Consideration of the Risks and Benefits of E-Cigarettes

David J. K. Balfour et al.

Summary: The topic of e-cigarettes is controversial, with focus on balancing the risks for young people and the potential for assisting smokers to quit. Public perception often sees e-cigarette use as equally or more dangerous than smoking, despite research suggesting otherwise. Policymakers need to weigh how to reduce youth vaping while increasing the likelihood of adult smoking cessation.

A comparison of tobacco product prevalence by different frequency of use thresholds across three US surveys

Luz Maria Sanchez-Romero et al.

Summary: The prevalence of each tobacco product use varies depending on the survey and frequency threshold adopted, with differences observed between the PATH, NHIS, and TUS-CPS surveys. Different frequency thresholds have a significant impact on the prevalence of other combustibles and e-cigarettes use. The choice of survey and frequency threshold is crucial when monitoring tobacco use patterns.

Summary: The electronic cigarette, considered a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes, has revolutionized the tobacco industry. While it may be safer than conventional cigarettes, there are still debates on its safety and effectiveness as a smoking cessation method. Short-term use of e-cigarettes has shown harmful effects, and the long-term impact remains insufficiently understood.
