Attosecond field emission

H. Y. Kim et al.

Summary: Field emission of electrons is essential for advancements in science and technology, allowing for higher frequency signal processing and atomic-scale imaging. The use of intense laser pulses has enabled confinement and control of optical field emission, but the measurement of attosecond electron pulses has been challenging. In this study, intense sub-cycle light transients were used to induce and investigate the dynamics of electron pulses, providing new opportunities for research in attosecond physics and nano-optics.

Tracing attosecond electron emission from a nanometric metal tip

Philip Dienstbier et al.

Summary: Solids exposed to intense electric fields release electrons through tunnelling, which plays a vital role in various applications. In this study, we use two-colour modulation spectroscopy to uncover the suboptical-cycle strong-field emission dynamics from nanostructures, with attosecond precision. By measuring the photoelectron spectra and matching the quantum model to the experiment, we determine the emission duration of 710 +/- 30 attoseconds. These results have implications for ultrafast electron sources, quantum degeneracy studies, nanoplasmonics, and petahertz electronics.

Coherent control at gold needle tips approaching the strong-field regime

Philip Dienstbier et al.

Summary: Coherent control of photoemission from a gold needle tip was demonstrated using an omega - 2(omega) field composed of strong few-cycle laser pulses, with nearfield intensity of around 4 TW/cm(2). Changing the relative phase between the fundamental field and its second harmonic modulated the total emitted photocurrent with visibilities of up to 80% despite strong and broadband excitation of the plasmonic material. This work combines a two-color coherent control scheme with strong-field physics enabled by a nanoplasmonic emitter.

Onset of charge interaction in strong-field photoemission from nanometric needle tips

Johannes Schoetz et al.

Summary: Research on photoemission and photocurrents from nano-sized tungsten needle tips exposed to controlled laser fields revealed a rapid increase in emitted electron energies beyond a certain intensity threshold, indicating the onset of charge interaction dominated photoemission dynamics. This finding may also be relevant for photoemission from other nanostructures and PHz-scale devices.
