On the application of rainfall projections from a convection-permitting climate model to lumped catchment models

M. J. Ascott et al.

Summary: Climate change is expected to lead to higher rainfall intensity in tropical regions. This study investigates the potential impacts of explicit modeling of convective rainfall, using a convection-permitting climate model, on river flows in the tropics. The results show that the convection-permitting model produces greater river flows compared to a model using parameterised convection, both in the current and future climate. However, the proximity of the catchments to Lake Victoria limits the changes in extreme rainfall and river flows, relative to changes in mean rainfall and river flows. The study also suggests that the buffering effect of large-scale storage in the catchments, associated with wetland cover, may mitigate the impact of rainfall extremes on river flows.

The role of grassland for erosion and flood mitigation in Europe: A meta-analysis

Filippo Milazzo et al.

Summary: Permanent grasslands play a crucial role in protecting the landscape from soil erosion and flooding, but this role has not been fully quantified. The degradation of grasslands is quickly increasing, leading to erosion and runoff. This study aims to quantify the erosion and flooding mitigation effect of permanent grasslands compared to other land uses, as well as review the soil erosion processes affecting grasslands in the EU.

Variability conceals emerging trend in 100yr projections of UK local hourly rainfall extremes

Elizabeth J. J. Kendon et al.

Summary: Extreme precipitation is projected to intensify with warming, and the frequency of heavy rainfall events in the UK is expected to increase significantly in the coming decades. However, these changes are not linear and can be influenced by internal variability, resulting in periods of no new rainfall records despite previous extreme years. This clustering of extreme events poses challenges for adaptation and planning.

Have anthropogenic factors mitigated or intensified soil erosion over the past three decades in South China?

Nian Li et al.

Summary: Soil erosion poses a direct threat to the sustainability of natural resources and the environment, especially in regions with frequent human activities. This study in South China from 1985 to 2015 shows a significant decrease in soil erosion, with anthropogenic factors playing a vital role. Conservation practices have contributed to reducing soil erosion, but the impacts of urban expansion and plantation development cannot be ignored. The study provides valuable insights for decision makers to better understand human impacts on soil erosion and support regional soil loss reduction for sustainable ecological development.

Causal Impacts of El Nino-Southern Oscillation on Global Soil Moisture Over the Period 2015-2100

Thanh Le et al.

Summary: This study assessed the causal effects of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on global soil moisture using CMIP6 models and found that it is likely to have impacts on soil moisture in various regions. The consistency of ENSO's causal impacts differs among regions, with lower consistency in Southeast Asia and higher consensus in eastern Africa, western Asia, Australia, south central North America, and South America. Additionally, the results suggest an expansion in the spatial influences of ENSO on regional soil moisture in the future compared to the historical period.

Global impact of climate change on soil erosion and potential for adaptation through soil conservation

Joris P. C. Eekhout et al.

Summary: This study provides a global assessment of the impact of climate change on soil erosion and the potential for adaptation through land use change and soil conservation. The results show a global increasing trend in soil erosion, with the highest increase projected in semi-arid regions. Land use change characterized by agricultural expansion and deforestation aggravate the impact, while reforestation, agricultural land abandonment, and soil conservation practices can entirely compensate for the impact of climate change on soil erosion. Therefore, soil conservation and integrated land use planning are crucial.

Summary: Soil is essential for food production and plays a vital role as a habitat. Preventing soil erosion, particularly caused by water, is crucial. This study fills a research gap in modeling soil loss in Northern and Eastern Europe and assesses the impact of climate change on soil erosion rates in Poland. The results show projected increases in soil erosion rates in the future, highlighting the importance of soil conservation policies.

Differences in hydrological impacts using regional climate model and nested convection-permitting model data

Alison Kay

Summary: Assessing the potential impacts of climate change on river flows is crucial for adaptation. A study comparing convection-permitting models (CPMs) and regional climate models (RCMs) for simulating river flows in the UK found that before bias correction, CPMs generally perform better than RCMs. Bias correction of precipitation improved the performance of both models. In terms of future flow projections, CPMs consistently projected higher flow changes than RCMs. However, the limited availability of CPM data in comparison to RCM/GCM data poses challenges for its wider application in adaptation planning.
