Comparing methods for calculating channel steepness index

Adam G. G. Smith et al.

Summary: Channel steepness index, derived from digital elevation models, is a powerful tool for interpreting tectonic processes. However, the choice of calculation method can greatly influence the values and findings of a study. It is important for authors to acknowledge the methodology used to ensure contextualization and reproducibility of results.

Role of Antecedent Rainfall in the Earthquake-Triggered Shallow Landslides Involving Unsaturated Slope Covers

Salvatore Martino et al.

Summary: Different soil cover saturation has a significant influence on slope stability conditions during earthquake-induced shaking. The influence of intense rainfall before an earthquake on soil cover saturation and weight was investigated. Numerical simulations were used to validate stability conditions under different saturation conditions, and the role of antecedent rainfall as a preparatory factor for earthquake-induced shallow landslides was demonstrated.

Tectono-Geomorphic Analysis in Low Relief, Low Tectonic Activity Areas: Case Study of the Temiskaming Region in the Western Quebec Seismic Zone (WQSZ), Eastern Canada

Monica Giona Bucci et al.

Summary: This study designed a workflow to investigate potential areas of neotectonic deformation using well-developed techniques, despite the site having low relief and low to moderate tectonic activity. The results showed that the combination of cluster analysis, detailed morphometric analysis, and mapping known structural features could efficiently identify neotectonic activity in such areas. Additionally, the research extended the application of morphometric analysis to regions with low relief and tectonic activity levels.

A morphotectonic approach to the study of earthquakes in Rome

Fabrizio Marra et al.

Summary: Rome has the longest historical record of earthquakes, but no destructive earthquake has been reported in the sources. Through the analysis of a recent moderate earthquake, researchers found that it reactivated an ancient fault and the drainage network in the area is controlled by a set of buried faults. The lack of strong seismicity in the historical record may be explained by the presence of small faults and a weaker tectonic regime compared to the Pleistocene.

Late Quaternary Tectonics along the Peri-Adriatic Sector of the Apenninic Chain (Central-Southern Italy): Inspecting Active Shortening through Topographic Relief and Fluvial Network Analyses

Federica Ferrarini et al.

Summary: The study reveals the existence of active compressional tectonic activity along the Southern Apenninic Outer Front in central-southern Italy during the Lower-Middle Pleistocene, challenging the geological and seismotectonic interpretation of the region. Integration of topographic and fluvial network analyses identified evidence of localized rock uplift in the Abruzzo region, aiding in explaining the observed anomalies.

Summary: The study analyzes micro-seismicity recorded in the Gargano Promontory and surrounding regions from April 2013 until the present, revealing characteristics of seismic activity and factors such as focal mechanisms and stress field. Earthquake events are influenced by different types of faults, related to geological structures.

Morphoneotectonics of the Abruzzo Periadriatic Area (Central Italy): Morphometric Analysis and Morphological Evidence of Tectonics Features

Enrico Miccadei et al.

Summary: The study conducted an integrated analysis of morphometrics, structural geomorphology, and fluvial terraces in the Abruzzo Periadriatic Area. Geomorphological indexes and markers were used to detect landscape responses to drainage system instability and tectonic deformation processes. This study provides a scientific basis for defining main phases of landscape evolution and the impact of morphoneotectonic processes on fluvial environments in uplifting piedmont areas.
