The diagnosis and treatment of mono- and polyneuropathy is a crucial aspect of orthopedic management. Orthopedic providers should be aware of the risk of iatrogenic nerve injury during surgery and the presence of underlying neuropathies, such as diabetes, which can complicate postoperative outcomes. Interdisciplinary collaboration between orthopedic and neurology providers, along with the involvement of occupational therapists, plays a significant role in diagnosing and treating neuropathy conditions.
Diagnosis and treatment of mono-and polyneuropathy is an important aspect of orthopedic management. Orthopedic providers should be aware of iatrogenic nerve injury risk during surgery, in addition to other underlying neuropathies (eg, diabetes) that may complicate postsurgical outcomes. Interdisciplinary care between orthopedic and neurology providers play an important role in diagnosing and treating neuropathy conditions, whereas occupational therapists can address functional impairments.
