Intangible cultural heritage, inequalities and participation: who decides on heritage?

Summary: Since the adoption of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (CSICH) in 2003, indigenous and minority cultural rights have gained increasing recognition, but also faced challenges such as public discourses, homogenizing language, and external pressures from tourism, commodification, and digitalization. Two cases explore the 'human dimension' of cultural heritage in ICH, highlighting how marginalized groups have found their way into celebrations of cultural life, religious identities, and spiritual practice amidst decolonizing contexts.
