The Function of Metaphor Modality in Memes on Jordanian Facebook Pages

Summary: This study examines the function of metaphor modality in a corpus of 250 memes from two Jordanian-based Facebook pages. The study finds that metaphors in the memes are conveyed through common source domains, word-image incompatibility, and intertextual links to facilitate understanding. The results also show that multimodal metaphors are more frequent than monomodal metaphors in the target memes, possibly due to the desire for maximum contextual effects with minimum processing time. The study also discusses the universality and culture-specificity of the metaphors found.

Variation in Negation Patterns of Verbless Clauses in Ammani Arabic

Summary: This study examines the social constraints on the alternation between the common negation patterns [mu] and [mi?] in verbless clauses in Ammani Arabic. Gender is found to be the most significant social factor, with [mu] being a solid marker of femininity. Age is the second most significant factor, with younger speakers preferring less complex forms. Education and region also play a role, albeit to a lesser extent.

Blood metaphors and metonymies in Jordanian Arabic and English

Summary: This study examines the metaphorical and metonymical uses of blood in Jordanian Arabic, finding that blood is utilized to conceptualize character traits, essence and emotion in the language. Similarities were attributed to cognitive embodiment of bodily substances like blood for abstract concepts, while differences were linked to socio-cultural embodiment of certain blood qualities in the Jordanian community.
