Summary: This study examines how impoliteness is expressed through code-switching in the Hong Kong Cantonese television talk show Sze U Tonight. It explores the norms governing code-switching and impoliteness in the context of semi-institutional conversations on a Hong Kong television talk show, taking into account the unique combination of Hong Kong's colonial background and its current status as part of China. Using Spencer-Oatey's rapport management framework, this paper discusses the forms and functions of code-switching that manifest as impoliteness in the media of a multilingual Chinese society.

A quantitative analysis of the reactions of viewers with hearing impairment to the intralingual subtitling of Egyptian movies

Summary: This study investigates the reactions of viewers with hearing impairment to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) subtitles added to Vernacular Arabic movies during the COVID-19 stay-at-home period. The findings indicate that the participants responded positively to the intralingual subtitling, with satisfactory technical specifications and helpful paralinguistic information that enhances their feeling of social inclusion.

Pedagogical devices On the subtitling of Atayalic speech in Indigenous films from Taiwan

Summary: The partial translation of Indigenous films has been seen as a challenge for outsiders to understand the film from insiders' perspectives. However, due to language shift in Indigenous communities, a more inclusive approach to subtitling should be expected. Analyzing three Indigenous films from Taiwan, it was found that a pedagogical subtitling approach was used in films made in a context of concern about language shift.

Using Modern Standard Arabic in subtitling Egyptian comedy movies for the deaf/ hard of hearing

Summary: The study investigates how deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences received Modern Standard Arabic subtitles in Egyptian comedy movies, finding that intralingual subtitling is a step in the right direction for making audiovisual materials accessible and enhancing social inclusion. Differences in information included in MSA subtitles compared to Egyptian dialectal utterances were noted, with the additional information in subtitles helping over half of the participants gain better access to the movie elements.
