Egyptian parents' responses to children's complaints focusing on the influence of sex and age

Dina Abdel Salam El-Dakhs et al.

Summary: The current study examined the complaint-response strategies of Egyptian parents to their children's complaints. The results showed that parents preferred using partial-acceptance strategies, particularly in the form of justifying oneself and suggesting alternatives. Rejection strategies were used to a lesser extent. Parents tended to justify their decisions using positive outcomes and ill consequences, often invoking religious reasons and societal norms with older children. Mothers were more likely to employ partial-acceptance strategies with younger children and older sons, while fathers were more likely to use rejection strategies with older daughters. There were statistically significant age differences in fathers' use of complaint-response strategies, but no significant impact of age on mothers' behavior.

Face Management and Negative Strengthening: The Role of Power Relations, Social Distance, and Gender

Nicole Gotzner et al.

Summary: Negated gradable adjectives often convey an interpretation stronger than their literal meaning, referred to as 'negative strengthening.' The negative strengthening of positive adjectives is more likely to occur pragmatically (e.g. 'not kind' meaning rather mean) than that of negative adjectives (e.g. 'not mean' meaning rather kind). The role of face management in negative strengthening interacts differently with social variables such as power, social distance, and gender.
