Breath volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as biomarkers for the diagnosis of pathological conditions: A review

Pedro Catala Moura et al.

Summary: The normal and abnormal/pathological status of physiological processes in the human organism can be characterized through Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emitted in breath. These compounds have been recognized as valuable biomarkers for the rapid, accurate, non-invasive, and painless diagnosis of various diseases and health conditions. This study reviews the most promising results in the field of breath biomarkers and the common methods of detecting VOCs, while also providing a database of compounds for 16 different pathologies.

A pilot study for the prediction of liver function related scores using breath biomarkers and machine learning

Rakesh Kumar Patnaik et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for early detection and progress monitoring of liver diseases using volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath as biomarkers. Machine learning is applied to predict scores for liver function diagnosis, and significant differences in breath profiles are found between liver patients and healthy volunteers.

Diagnosis of COVID-19 via acoustic analysis and artificial intelligence by monitoring breath sounds on smartphones

Zhiang Chen et al.

Summary: Scientific evidence suggests that acoustic analysis can be used as an indicator for diagnosing COVID-19. By analyzing breath sounds recorded on smartphones, researchers have discovered different patterns in both the time and frequency domains for patients with COVID-19. These patterns are utilized to diagnose the infection of COVID-19, employing statistical analysis, frequency domain analysis, and Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) in k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifiers. Test results demonstrate that the CNN classifier achieves an impressive accuracy rate of over 97%, while kNN with optimized features achieves more than 85%. This paper also introduces optimization methods for feature selection and various metrics for performance evaluation. The high accuracy of the CNN model leads to its implementation in an Android app, providing a powerful tool for society to diagnose COVID-19 regardless of the availability of other medical resources. The initial medical test shows promising results, indicating the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method when compared to the lateral flow method.

Insights into Molecular Structure of Pterins Suitable for Biomedical Applications

Andrey A. Buglak et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the quantum chemistry and photonics of pterins, providing a comprehensive overview of their electronic structure and potential applications in biomedicine. The study suggests that UV irradiation of pterins can affect enzymatic reactions and that the emission properties of pterins can be used in fluorescence diagnostics. The use of two-photon absorption and metal nanostructures is also proposed for pterin-related infrared therapy and spectroscopy detection of biomarkers.

Development of a machine-learning algorithm to predict in-hospital cardiac arrest for emergency department patients using a nationwide database

Ji Hoon Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a machine-learning model was developed using data obtained at the prehospital stage to predict in-hospital cardiac arrest in the emergency department. The model showed good performance and identified several important factors, such as oxygen supply, age, and oxygen saturation, that contribute to the prediction.

The Gut-Liver Axis in Health and Disease: The Role of Gut Microbiota-Derived Signals in Liver Injury and Regeneration

Zhipeng Zheng et al.

Summary: Liver diseases often involve liver regeneration after injury, which can be influenced by changes in gut microbiota and signals through the gut-liver axis. Modulation of gut microbiota by antibiotics or probiotics impacts liver injury and regeneration. Microbial metabolites such as lipopolysaccharide and bile acids may play roles in these processes.
