Does political decentralization affect income inequality? The role of governance quality

Vassilis Tselios

Summary: This paper examines the impact of political decentralization on income inequality and argues that the quality of governance plays a crucial role. Using instrumental variables/two-stage least squares method, the study finds that an increase in decentralization reduces inequality, especially in countries with lower governance quality. The results suggest that institution-specific decentralization strategies can effectively reduce inequality.

Summary: Economic change has resulted in greater inequality, leading to the rise of populism. This article examines the relationship between local GDP per capita, interpersonal inequality, and far-right populism in Europe and the USA. The analysis shows that while there are similarities and differences in the factors influencing populist voting, economic decline and racial composition play significant roles in determining populist support.

The evolution of the Kuznets curve in Canada

Sebastien Breau et al.

Summary: This paper uses a unique panel dataset of Canadian regions to examine whether inter-personal income inequality increases after the initial inverted-U pattern is completed. The findings support a wavelike curve, with a turning point in the late-1990s/early-2000s, where inter-personal inequality across regions bottoms out before starting to increase. While various factors are associated with this reversal, the study provides evidence that the size of a region contributes to the recent rise in inequality.

Spatial-Temporal Determinants of Income Inequality in the Cantons of Ecuador between 2010 and 2019: a Spatial Panel Econometric Analysis

Byron Quito et al.

Summary: Despite growth and implemented mechanisms, income inequality remains a latent problem passed down through generations. This study aims to estimate the effect of determinants of income inequality at the cantonal level in Ecuador. The findings suggest that the current rate of growth in production per capita has led to a decrease in inequality levels. However, the concentration of human capital in certain cantons has increased inequality, while the entrepreneurial structure of micro and small enterprises helps mitigate inequality between cantons. These findings highlight the importance of promoting more homogeneous growth, reducing concentration of human capital, and prioritizing the development of Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises to improve income levels and reduce inequality in Ecuador.
