Estimating GRACE terrestrial water storage anomaly using an improved point mass solution

Vagner Ferreira et al.

Summary: The availability and use of terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) supports various hydrological applications. There are currently five operational TWSA products, three based on mass concentration (mascon) solutions and two based on spherical harmonic coefficients (SHCs) synthesis. This study presents a new TWSA data set based on novel processing protocols, with a spatial re-sampling of 0.25 arc-degrees from 2002 to 2022, which reliably agrees with mascon solutions. The proposed data set would be valuable for regional hydrological applications, particularly for improved assessment of regional water budgets.

WHU-GRACE-GPD01s: A Series of Constrained Monthly Gravity Field Solutions Derived From GRACE-Based Geopotential Differences

Bo Zhong et al.

Summary: To suppress correlated noise, a series of constrained monthly gravity field solutions named WHU-GRACE-GPD01s were developed from August 2002 to July 2016 using GRACE-based geopotential differences. The constrained solutions were estimated using Kaula regularization and their performance was validated against official SH solutions and mass concentration solutions. The results showed that the constrained solutions were comparable to the official SH solutions and can be used without postprocessing.

Simulation analysis of regional surface mass anomalies inversion based on different types of constraints

Bo Zhong et al.

Summary: Surface mass anomalies estimated by the mascon approach using GRACE observations have higher spatial resolution compared to spheric harmonic solutions. Different types of constraints applied to mascon solutions estimation yield consistent results under optimal regularization parameters, but the signal strength may be weaker due to the smoothing effect of regularization.

Novel Along-Track Processing of GRACE Follow-On Laser Ranging Measurements Found Abrupt Water Storage Increase and Land Subsidence During the 2021 March Australian Flooding

Shin-Chan Han et al.

Summary: The eastern part of Australia experienced intense rainfall and flooding in March 2021 following extreme drought in 2019-2020, leading to the highest groundwater recharge speed and land subsidence recorded in the region over the past two decades. Compared to the dry conditions in 2020, the wet antecedent condition of soils in 2021 led to faster water replenishment and extensive runoff and flooding.
