Europeanization and De-Europeanization of Turkey's Gender Equality Policy: The Case of the Istanbul Convention

Marella Bodur Un et al.

Summary: The study examines the (de)-Europeanization of Turkey's gender equality policy, noting that the decreasing credibility of EU conditionality coupled with domestic political dynamics weakened the EU as a reference point in domestic debates, leading to the reversal of policies ensuring gender equality by pro-family conservative discourses and policies. Domestic factors such as the country's turn towards authoritarianism, and international factors such as stalled EU-Turkey relations and backlash against gender equality in EU member states are identified as key dimensions of the de-Europeanization of gender equality policy.

The rise and fall of support for the Istanbul Convention: Understanding the case of KADEM

Merve Kutuk-Kuris

Summary: This article discusses the role and controversy of women within the Turkish Justice and Development Party and the Women and Democracy Association. The article argues that Islamist women use the changing structures within the male-dominated system and wider political structure to advocate for women's rights. However, they do not always prioritize gender interests over the larger political agenda of their movements. The Istanbul Convention is an important example where Islamist women clashed with male-governed movements.
