Outcomes after neonatal cardiac surgery: The impact of a dedicated neonatal cardiac program

Nimrod Goldshtrom et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the in-hospital outcomes of patients with different gestational ages in neonatal cardiac surgery and highlight the importance of a dedicated neonatal cardiac program in preventing mortality in preterm infants. The results of the study showed lower in-hospital mortality and morbidity rates for preterm infants undergoing cardiac surgery under the specialized program, particularly for those with isolated congenital heart disease.

Contemporary Relationship Between Hospital Volume and Outcomes in Congenital Heart Surgery

Karl F. Welke et al.

Summary: There is a relationship between surgical volume and outcomes in congenital heart surgery. This relationship is strongest for high-risk surgeries. These findings can guide initiatives to improve care in congenital heart surgery.

Critical Care Unit Organizational and Personnel Factors Impact Cardiac Arrest Prevention and Rescue in the Pediatric Cardiac Population

Javier J. Lasa et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the association between potentially modifiable organizational and personnel factors and cardiac arrest prevention and rescue in pediatric cardiac ICUs. The analysis revealed that cardiac ICU bed occupancy, registered nurse experience, and physician staffing may be important factors associated with cardiac arrest prevention and rescue.

Evolving Cost-Quality Relationship in Pediatric Heart Surgery

Sara K. Pasquali et al.

Summary: The study examined the relationship between hospital quality, costs, and clinical outcomes for children undergoing congenital heart surgery in the United States. Hospital costs vary across hospitals, but were not significantly associated with most quality metrics examined, except for postoperative length of stay (PLOS) and high-risk cases. The findings suggest that cost variability may be influenced by care processes related to PLOS and high-risk cases, providing potential targets for value-based initiatives in this population.

Paediatric cardiac rapid response systems: a survey of multicentre practices

Aarti C. Bavare et al.

Summary: The study found that pediatric cardiac rapid response practices in the United States and Canada are variable, and dedicated pediatric cardiac rapid response systems are infrequent. There is an opportunity to delineate best practices for pediatric cardiac rapid response and standardize practices for activation, training, patient monitoring post-rapid response events, and outcomes evaluation.

A Path FORWARD: Development of a Comprehensive Multidisciplinary Clinic to Create Health and Wellness for the Child and Adolescent with a Fontan Circulation

Jack Rychik et al.

Summary: It is anticipated that most individuals with single-ventricle malformation will survive surgical reconstruction through a Fontan operation. However, they face various challenges including cardiovascular issues, lymphatic circulation abnormalities, organ dysfunction, delayed growth and development, and mental health problems. Therefore, comprehensive multidisciplinary care is crucial, and the FORWARD program is proposed as a model to address these challenges.

Addressing Social Determinants of Health and Mitigating Health Disparities Across the Lifespan in Congenital Heart Disease: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Keila N. Lopez et al.

Summary: Despite improvements in life expectancy, patients with congenital heart disease still face disparities in morbidity and mortality throughout their lifespan. These disparities are caused by systemic inequities, differences in access to healthcare, and poor quality of health services. To address these issues, it is necessary to examine the contributions of various factors, such as social determinants of health and structural racism, and develop strategies to eliminate health inequities. This scientific statement focuses on the contributions of different levels to health inequities in congenital heart disease care and provides recommendations for improvement in lifelong care.

Mental Health Disorders in Children With Congenital Heart Disease

Vincent J. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study found that youth with congenital heart disease (CHD) of all severities have significantly higher odds of anxiety, depression, and ADHD compared to those without CHD. Children with complex CHD had the highest odds of diagnosis or treatment for anxiety and/or depression. Minority and uninsured youth were significantly less likely to be diagnosed or treated for these conditions.

Six-Year Neurodevelopmental Outcomes for Children With Single-Ventricle Physiology

Renee Sananes et al.

Summary: The study explores patterns of neurodevelopment in children with single-ventricle anomalies and the predictive value of early evaluations on behavior at age 6. The findings suggest that deficits in neurodevelopment may change with age and early developmental scores may predict 6-year outcomes, although they cannot effectively predict impairments in adaptive skills at the age of 6.
