Exercise as medicine for depressive symptoms? A systematic review and meta-analysis with meta-regression

Andreas Heissel et al.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis found that exercise is effective in treating depression and depressive symptoms, and should be considered as a viable treatment option. Beneficial exercise interventions include supervised and group exercise, with a focus on moderate intensity and aerobic exercise. However, the small sample sizes of many studies and high heterogeneity in methods should be taken into account when interpreting the results.

Physical activity promotion by GPs: a cross- sectional survey in England

Anna Lowe et al.

Summary: This study examined the awareness, knowledge, and confidence of UK-based GPs in promoting physical activity (PA), as well as the barriers and facilitators they encounter. The findings showed that while most GPs value PA, there are well-known barriers that hinder its promotion in primary care. However, certain support tools and initiatives are widely utilized.

Impact of a web-based personally tailored physical activity intervention on depression, anxiety, stress and quality of life: Secondary outcomes from a randomized controlled trial

Corneel Vandelanotte et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of a web-based personally tailored physical activity intervention on mental health outcomes. The results showed significant reductions in depression, anxiety, stress, and mental health component of quality of life in the intervention group. However, there were no significant improvements in device-measured physical activity or overall quality of life. These findings suggest that web-based physical activity interventions can have positive effects on mental health.

Summary: Prolonged sedentary behavior is a risk factor for increased depression and anxiety symptoms in adults. Replacing sedentary behavior with moderate-to-vigorous physical activity may reduce mental health risks, but further research is needed to clarify the role of light activity.
