A parametric study on the mechanical properties of MIG and TIG welded dissimilar steel joints

Mehmet Sukru Adin

Summary: The effects of Total Accumulated Weld Volumes (TAWV) and different groove angles on the mechanical properties of AISI 1040 and AISI 8620 cylindrical steel joints were investigated. The results showed that the TIG welded joint had the highest average Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of 579.611 MPa, while the MIG welded joint had the lowest average UTS value of 424.611 MPa. The UTS values of the joints were positively affected by the increase in TAWV, and the 90 degrees groove angled joint had a 40.25% higher UTS value than the 45 degrees groove angled joint.

Acquisition of Key Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer Molding Parameters through Reverse Scanning for Application in the Manufacturing of Large Fiber-Reinforced-Plastic Products

Guang-Min Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, a method for rapid porosity and permeability estimation was developed using GeoDict software and reverse scanning. The proposed method showed a 10% variation in porosity and permeability parameters compared to one-dimensional resin flow and Easyperm tests. The integration of the proposed method with Moldex3D allowed for accurate simulation of resin flow in large FRP products with a variation of less than 8%. This method can increase process planning efficiency and product stability in large wind turbine FRP parts and FRP yacht components.

Abrasive water jet machining of glass fibre reinforced polymer composite: experimental investigation, modelling and optimization

Anil Kumar Dahiya et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental investigation, modelling, and optimization of abrasive water jet machining (AWJM) of glass fibre reinforced polymer composite. The effects of water pressure, stand-off distance, traverse rate, and abrasive mass flow rate on delamination length, surface roughness, and kerf taper are studied. Regression models are developed to predict these parameters using response surface methodology. A desirability function approach is used for multi-objective optimization, achieving a reasonably good and acceptable combination of desired values. The confirmation test shows that the optimized process parameters result in low percentage errors for all three parameters.

Effect of MWCNTS on mechanical properties of woven fabric hybrid polymeric nanocomposites and finite element analysis of nanocomposite

Suhas Uthale et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical behavior of hybrid polymeric nanocomposites with 0.1 wt% and 0.2 wt% multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and studied the effect of fiber orientation on the mechanical properties of the hybrid nanocomposites. It was found that adding MWCNTs to the epoxy enhanced the mechanical properties. Hybrid composite and hybrid nanocomposite panels were made using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). Test specimens were cut from the composites and tested according to ASTM standards. The results showed that the hybrid nanocomposite with 0.1 wt% of MWCNTs exhibited improved strength and properties at a relatively low cost.

Effect of particles on tensile and bending properties of jute epoxy composites

Hamit Adin et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of composite materials made from woven jute were investigated by adding aluminum, mica, and ceramic particles into epoxy adhesive layers. Results showed that the tensile and bending failure loads of the composite materials increased with the use of particle-reinforced adhesive. The biggest improvements were seen with 4 wt% aluminum for tensile strength and 2 wt% aluminum for bending strength.

Review and Suggestion of Failure Theories in Voids Scenario for VARTM Processed Composite Materials

Vivek Kumar Dhimole et al.

Summary: Fiber-reinforced composite structures are widely used in various applications due to their excellent strength to weight ratio. Vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) is a highly productive and cost-effective manufacturing process, but the presence of voids and fiber misalignment in the final processed composite can impact its strength and reliability. Proper selection and understanding of failure theories are necessary to account for void defects and improve the design effectiveness for composites.
