Exploring the economic impacts of carbon tax in China using a dynamic computable general equilibrium model under a perspective of technological progress

Yuanhua Chang et al.

Summary: The carbon tax, as an environmental regulation tool, can promote technological progress, which has been overlooked in previous evaluations of its economic impact. This study uses the Generalized Method of Moment model to examine the effect of an environmental tax on total factor productivity and energy efficiency. The findings suggest that a carbon tax policy initially negatively impacts GDP but can become positive in the later stages due to technological progress and a transition to low-carbon industries.

The power of belief: Religious traditions and rent-seeking of polluting enterprises in China

Weijian Du et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of religious traditions on enterprise rent-seeking behavior and the underlying mechanism. The findings suggest that stronger religious traditions are associated with weaker rent-seeking behavior. The mechanism analysis reveals that religious traditions can inhibit rent-seeking by enhancing integrity and risk aversion in enterprises. The moderating effect analysis demonstrates that regional corruption and market monopoly weaken the negative relationship between religious traditions and rent-seeking behavior. This study contributes to understanding the complementary role of informal institutions in countries worldwide.

Environmental tax reform and environmental investment: A quasi-natural experiment based on China's Environmental Protection Tax Law

Guangqiang Liu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of China's environmental tax implementation on firms' environmental investments using Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share listed companies from 2015 to 2019. The results show a significant increase in firms' environmental investments after the implementation of the tax. The positive effect is more significant for state-owned companies and companies subject to high media attention, but there is no obvious difference between companies in regions with different levels of economic development. Further analysis reveals that government subsidies negatively affect firms' environmental investments, but the environmental tax reduces such subsidies and thus increases firms' environmental investments. Additionally, the results show that the environmental tax promotes firms' performance through increased environmental investments.

The influence of environmental protection tax law on total factor productivity: Evidence from listed firms in China

Yu He et al.

Summary: The Environmental Protection Tax Law (EPTL) is a significant environmental policy in China aimed at improving production efficiency, reducing pollutant emissions, and promoting sustainable growth. This study finds that the EPTL promotes the total factor productivity (TFP) of heavy polluters and its effect increases over time. Additionally, the policy has a stronger promoting effect on firms with lower TFP levels and the effect exponentially increases when certain thresholds for research and development investment, government subsidies, and firm profitability are exceeded. However, the policy has a worse impact on politically connected firms and firms in provinces where tax rates increased.
