Pursuing Paid Employment for Youth with Severe Disabilities: Multiple Perspectives on Pressing Challenges

Barriers to work-based learning experiences: A mixed methods study of perceptions from the field

Summary: This study aimed to identify community- and school-related barriers to implementing work-based learning experiences (WBLEs). The findings revealed that limited availability of resources, transportation issues, and lack of willing employers were critical barriers to implementing WBLEs. Collaborative partnerships between vocational agencies and school districts have the potential to address some of these barriers and improve the delivery of employment supports and WBLEs.

Vocabulary Acquisition by Multilingual Students With Extensive Support Needs During Shared Reading

Summary: This study examined the effects of a shared reading instructional package on the receptive identification of English sight vocabulary in multilingual learners with extensive support needs. The results showed that both participants achieved the criterion on word sets as a result of the intervention. Considerations for classroom implementation and future research were discussed.

Teachers identified barriers in school and community settings, including issues with opportunities, resources, stakeholder support, time, and support for students. Despite reporting barriers separately in different settings, teachers' responses were similar and collapsed into common themes.

Academic and Social Effects of Inclusion on Students without Disabilities: A Review of the Literature

Summary: Inclusive education, which involves educating students with disabilities together with students without disabilities, has shown positive academic and social effects on both groups. While students with disabilities benefit from inclusion, typically developing students may experience mixed academic outcomes depending on their grade levels. Additionally, being in inclusive classrooms has socially benefited typically developing students by reducing negative attitudes and increasing tolerance and understanding.

Secondary Transition Predictors of Postschool Success: An Update to the Research Base

Summary: Research indicates that youth with disabilities are less likely to achieve positive outcomes compared to their non-disabled peers. Identifying in-school predictors of post-school success is important for designing effective transition programs and supporting the success of students with disabilities. This systematic literature review provides evidence for existing predictors and identifies new predictors that can contribute to better outcomes for students with disabilities.
