A novel cascade latent heat thermal energy storage system consisting of erythritol and paraffin wax for deep recovery of medium-temperature industrial waste heat

Sheng Yang et al.

Summary: Recovering medium-temperature industrial waste heat through latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) can significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption. A cascade LHTES system combining erythritol and paraffin wax units was proposed to recover waste heat during charging and increase heat supply temperature during discharging. Prototype testing showed that the cascade system improved waste heat recovery efficiency from 15.8% to 63.4% and increased the average heat supply temperature from 37°C to 53.6°C. This highly efficient cascade LHTES system has great potential for decarbonized space heating.

Genetic algorithm optimization for double pipe heat exchanger PCM storage system during charging and discharging processes

Javid Zamani et al.

Summary: Nowadays, the world is facing an energy crisis, with residential buildings in developed countries accounting for a significant portion of global energy demand. To achieve sustainable energy systems, it is crucial to reduce energy consumption in this sector. The use of phase change materials (PCMs) in energy systems is identified as one of the feasible solutions. This study focuses on investigating the application of PCMs in a dual-pipe latent heat exchanger system for thermal energy storage, with the aim of optimizing the charging and discharging operations to enhance energy efficiency and minimize exergy destruction.

A comprehensive evaluation on the cycling stability of sugar alcohols for medium-temperature latent heat storage

Xue-Feng Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cycling stability of four pure and three mixture sugar alcohols and evaluated their phase change behaviors and stability. It was found that the latent heats of fusion/crystallization degrade upon consecutive melting-crystallization cycles, and a higher degree of superheat leads to a faster degradation. Introducing protective nitrogen gas could suppress oxidation and improve cycling stability.
