Deriving transport appraisal values from emerging revealed preference data

Panagiotis Tsoleridis et al.

Summary: Transport demand models are widely used in policy making and future demand forecasting. The Value of Travel Time (VTT), derived from these models, helps understand the trade-offs travelers make regarding travel time and cost. While revealed preference (RP) data was previously used, concerns about reporting errors shifted the focus to state-preference (SP) surveys. More recently, passively-collected RP data from smartphone GPS tracking have shown promise in overcoming limitations. The present study utilized such a dataset to estimate VTT values, which were found to be similar to official guidelines obtained from SP data. These findings support the use of passively-generated RP data sources.

Daily travel behaviors and transport mode choice of older adults in Mexico City

Jessica Villena-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study examines the travel behaviors of older adults in Mexico City using the 2017 Household Origin-Destination Survey. The findings highlight the impact of income class, gender, and neighborhood access on mode choice and travel duration. The study reveals transportation inequalities, with poorer older adults spending longer periods of time traveling compared to wealthier counterparts. Additionally, access to good public transit infrastructure encourages older adults to utilize it regardless of car ownership. Gender differences were also observed, with older females less likely to use structured public transit, walking, and biking compared to older males.

Forecasting with a joint mode/time-of-day choice model based on combined RP and SC data

Pedro Lizana et al.

Summary: This paper formulates and estimates a joint travel mode-departure time model for commuting trips using combined revealed preference (RP) and stated choice (SC) data. The results show that the coefficients for travel time, cost, and cost divided by wage rate were fairly similar in both the RP and SC environments.

The overreliance on statistical goodness-of-fit and under-reliance on model validation in discrete choice models: A review of validation practices in the transportation academic literature

Giancarlos Parady et al.

Summary: An examination of transportation literature published between 2014 and 2018 reveals a lack of emphasis on validation performance measures, with most studies focusing on goodness-of-fit statistics and policy-relevant inference analysis. The paper argues that model validation should be a non-negotiable part of presenting a model for peer-review in academic journals, and proposes a simple heuristic for selecting validation methods based on available resources.
