Vigilante rituals theory: A cultural explanation of vigilante violence

Summary: This contribution presents a new theory called the vigilante rituals theory, which explains the origins of vigilante violence as stemming from fear, righteous anger, and retaliatory punitive desire due to violations of moral imperatives. It argues that morally outraged individuals engage in violent actions through mobilization and bodily alignment in vigilante rituals, which aim to restore moral imperatives and foster group unity. Additionally, the theory proposes several socio-legal conditions that influence the likelihood of vigilante rituals, such as legal legitimacy, exposure to violence, and authorities' encouragement of self-help. This theory provides a valuable contribution to existing explanations and offers potential for future empirical research.
